If you get a quality brand, ex. Enermax, Fortron, or Antec True, you won't need as much as the calculator suggest. If you get a cheap one, well just don't 😉
For what it is worth I think the PS issue is overblown, there are a lot of psosters that have never had ps problems and just spout what others have said.
I have tried lots of cheap supplies, maybe I should say inexpensive supplies.
I have used Deer, Raidmax, Generic crap for $12.00 and have never had a problem. They have all been AMD systems which take a lot of current usually a CD burner dvd drive and 2 hard drives, there is no doubt that some supplies are much better than others but I have not had a problem with any supply I have bought.
I agree Bleep, i've never worried to much about having the most powerful/expensive psu there is, although i usually stick with some model from Antec. When i built my new A64 machine with a 6800 GT, all sorts of people including Nvidia reccommended a state of the art 400w or more PS. I put all my new hardware in an Antec Sonata with a stock 380w i think and it runs perfect.
While he might not have had any problems, plenty of others have. When you are building a quality system there is no reason to skimp on the power source for your system. Sure, you might be able to get away with a cheapo supply, but why risk all of your hardware in doing so?
I'm not saying go out and buy the first 600 Watt power supplly you see. Just buy a quality supply. A little research on power supplies and you'll know which brands to stay away from.
couldn't agree more demonic, all i was saying is that there's no need to get a 550W PS, unless you are running an ungodly amount of hardware, dual cpus, tons of external devices, and even then, something that high for cosumer use is probably overkill. You get a lot of enthusiasts that have the mentally that more is better no matter what. Stick with tried and true quality products that will meet your requirements, and offer a little upgrade room.
