How do you keep the collars on Polo shirts looking nice?

Because the collars always get gnarled up after several washes, I only buy polo shirts made from performance fabric. The problem though is they aren't really good to wear during the colder months of the year.

I don't really have an answer. All my polos are the very thick, knitted Ralph Lauren but the collar still curls at the lapel and I've never found a real fix for it. I just settle for smoothing it out whenever I can and deal with it.

If you starched the collar, you could probably get it to stay down, but that's beyond my care level.

And @someonesmind, what is your suggestion? Wear a dress shirt every day? Hard pass on that, if a polo is acceptable in my workplace I'm going to wear that over a long sleeve dress shirt 9 times out of 10.

I get my polo shirts from Land's End (the 100% Supima cotton, Interlock knit) and they last for years. The list price is high but at least online they have a 30% off coupon every week or two.

I use my wife's hair straightener.

Also, it's natural for the points on soft cotton collars to curl and it looks fine.

If you want the collar points to be straight you might be better off wearing a dress shirt with buttoned points. Land's End also has two nice lines of dress shirts, the Hyde Park (heavier weight) and Pinpoint (soft, smooth) oxfords.

I think 60/40 cotton/poly polo shirts are a good compromise, with the appearance of a traditional piqué polo, but with the more desirable properties of a performance polo. I personally like the IZOD Advantage Polo.

They look better a little rough. Pressed polo collars look like poly shirts the counter help wears. That said, I'm not a big fan of polos. They aren't terrible, but not my favorite. Glad I get to wear exactly what at all times. Another benefit of being outside.

What do you wear in lieu of polo shirts? I bought a bunch of PGA Tour polo shirts and they've been holding up really well. I think I paid $40 each or so.
Button down shirts. Dress ones for profession, casual-ish ones for other. For casual/relaxing around the house it's tshirts.

Polos in general just suck, they look horrible as far as any style, and the collars are pointlessly stupid.

I've never found a comfortable button down shirt. Those light-weight polos are about as good as it gets.

Also the polos and anything really made out of poly feel nice, decent, and light... but 5 washes and there will be little nicks on them.
