how do you install WinXP on a laptop w/ no Cd-rom?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to know how you can go about installing windowsXP on a hard drive of a laptop without using any cd-rom or floppy drives what-so ever?

I have an HP Omni-book 900 that has no such thing on it.

I have heard of partitioning a hard drive and moving all the setup files for XP onto the partition, and than installing XP onto the main partition from that.

I'm a little flaky on how to do it though, anyone know where I can get this kind of information, or tell me how this is done?

Thanks, John

install the OS on the laptop hard drive on the desktop? Won't it use the desktops config for the OS? When I transfer the hard drive back to the laptop it might have config issues.

i would partition the harddrive into 2 partitions on another computer and then copy the install files to one partition then put it back in the laptop and use a boot disk or boot from a usb to go from there.

you probably could even install it on another computer then stick it back in the laptop and boot up and it'll just detect a whole bunch of new junk. not sure, but that would leave lots of messy files and registry settings around so that's not a good way.

or use an external usb kit for a cd/dvd drive and install to the laptop from that maybe.

this is the wrong forum btw for this type of question.

As others have suggested, you need to put the windows cd contents onto the a separate partition on the drive. You need to take out the drive from the laptop, then hook it up to an external case that supports laptop drives. I suggest using pq magic partitioning software or another software that allows you to resize and create partitions without having to delete the other partitions.

I assume that your Omni-book 900 is like my Thinkpad X22. Ultraportable laptop with no floppy or cdrom drive. Luckly for me, I also have the docking station with floppy and cdrom drive. I'm not sure usb booting was possible back then.
