How do you install LINUX?

I have been trying to install Linux for quite some time now. I 1st downloaded the full version of Fedora Core, then I tried SUSE 10.1, and just yesterday I tried a live CD of ubuntu 5.10. None worked, I can't even get into the start up screen, hell I see not mention of Linux whatsoever when the comp boots.

I burned the .iso files to bootable CDs and I set the comp to boot from the CD drive. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and this seems like a gd place to find out. You may have noticed I've posted similar threads but I thought it might get more attention this way.

My specs are as follows:

-Pentium 4 550 3.4 Ghz/1MB L2
-Abit AA8-DURAMAX mobo (LGA 775)
-Geforce 6600GT 128 MB pci-e Albatron
-Sony DVD-RW (not sure wich one)
-40GB HD Western Digital 7200rpm
-Kingston value-ram 512 DDR2 Ram
-I have verizon FIOS internet, will that be an issue?

I assume the plug & play components are irrelevant in this list no? If theres anything I'm missing just ask.

Thanks for any replies!

Who knows?
Can you describe what happens and what it says when you try to actually boot up with a cdrom?

Maybe you can try ordering a cdrom from Ubuntu and they'll mail some to you.
Can you boot up other computers with the cdrom you burned?

Thats just the thing nothign happens at all it boots up as if nothing...

Could someone tell me how 2 to it from the top? Maybe I got some of the 1st few steps wrong?

I tried it on 2 different comps already

When you downloaded the iso did you burn the iso directly to the cd or did you select a special option to 'burn as an image file'? Did you set the BIOS to boot from cd?

I downloaded the .iso file to my comp, then I opened NERO, burned it as a bootable disk.
I dont remember seeing any "burn as image file" options. And yes I set the Bios to boot from the CD.

Does your system boot up from other bootable CD's?

As far as the image burning process... Open Nero Smart Start and under the 'Copy and Backup' there's a 'Burn Image To Disc' selection. Choose that and it will prompt you for the image file. Browse to it and accept the defaults and that should do it. Once you're done making the CD look at it and verify it's a bootable CD and not a CD with just the .iso burned onto it.

I'm not positive but I don't think you'll have to manually partition your HD unless you want to. If I remember correctly both (Ubuntu and Fedora Core 4) Linux distos I've used had an automatic partitioning option.

LiveCD's leave your HD alone so no worries there.

In NERO once I choose "burn Image to disk" it dosent give me the option to make it a bootable...

Should I :
Click the "burn Image" icon tehn close the window when it prompts me to give the file, then choose the "bootable" option and THEN burn it?
