How do you hook up a DVD player to a tv with only a "cable" input?

My neighbor has an old tv with only a "cable" coax connection. They have a vcr hooked to the tv now. They plan to upgrade to a new tv eventually but would like to hook up their new DVD player now. Can they use the vcr to link into? How is this done?

man that's pretty ghetto.. if their vcr has rca inputs then they can loop it thru that first.. otherwise just get a new damn tv
oh wait ..i just remembered.. if their vcr has macrovision, which i'm sure it does, then the picture will be awful.. even more awful than watching dvd thru coaxial cable..

so just get a new tv

You need to buy an RF converter box. You should be able to get that at any Radio Shack or other electronics store. It has AV inputs on it.

You might have problems going thru the vcr though, because of macrovision... I suggest you buy a new 65" Widescreen HDTV.. That would solve your problems..

Radio Shack has to have a converter for that....or maybe it's time for a new TV for your neighbor, eh?

Just went though this with the g/f's tv. You need an rfconverter. I got hers at radio shack, $30 :( works well though. When you hook it up, don't use the red wire.

Why buy a new TV just to buy a new TV? I've got a TV that's 11 years old that has an incredible picture. I'm not giving it up until it's completely toast. Everyone says the macrovision will cause your DVD experience to suck if you run it through a VCR. This is what I've observed, and expected it in this case. The VCR I have is only a couple of years old, but the DVD player works great through it. So I'd say try that first, and if it doesn't work get an RF modulator. Circuit City, Best Buy, and Radio Shack all carry them, and they run about $30. I bought one from Circuit City last week, but I'll be returning it since I don't need it.

Unhook the tv and take it to the curb... then drive him to Worst Buy...

Yep, as others have said rf modulator. BB and CC has them also. You can try to see if the dvd player has a macrovision fix for it. Some do. My kids Apex was fixed and I was able to run thru the vcr.

you need one of those switch box things. and buying a new tv for something like that is dumb. unless its gonna look bad. i am still looking for a cheap dvd player for my 15 year old 20" sony. gotta love sony tv's this thing i used to watch on when i was 8 years old and my parents gave it to me for college. not to mention it even has rca inputs.

I once tried to send the DVD through the VCR and it didn't work right...
picture kept flipping vertically..

Hans.. why not try one of the Apex models.. Circuit City has 'em for $79! Or look for an open-box item... I just picked up a Apex 1500 for $59 at CC (open-Box) with full warranty.

Yeah I have an Apex AD-660. Not even one of their top of the line models, and it's played everything I've thrown at it. I've only have 1 problem with it, and that's if I leave it paused for a really long time (hours upon hours), the screen vertically flips. Gotta let it rest and it works fine again. I love my Apex. :)
