Serious answer - benadryl (or the generic name Diphenhydramine) is a very good sleep inducer for many people. 1 25mg tablet taken about half hour before bed will really help you fall asleep easier and stay asleep.

I'd steer clear of nyquil because it's a cocktail of a bunch of different things that are not needed if you don't have cold symptoms.

If it's an ongoing thing, I'd have him consult his doctor. It could be a combination of stress, eating habits, and exercise amounts.

Well as long as I'm not hot I usually don't have to much of an issue getting to bed, but I never sleep better than if I've worked out that day or have been physically active, maybe a short run in the evening would do him some good.

Don't do anything like read on your bed/do homework on your bed. The only time you should be on your bed is when you are going to sleep, and then it should be dark and quiet. Have a sleep schedule, always the same time, always 8 hours (or whatever works best). And exercise a couple hours before bedtime.

Follow those rules, and your body will become "used" to it, and sleeping will be easier.

Is benadryl available over the counter? NyQuil is a bit sketchy, and falling asleep peacefully would be much preferred over instant conk-out. Thank you for the suggestion, vi_edit.

Most certainly! Head to a grocery store and just look in the pharmacy isle for whatever their generic brand is of Diphenhydramine. It typically comes in 25mg doses.

Tylenol PM is also another choice, it's Diphenhydramine + some other drug which I can't remember. It works well, but is a lot more expensive.

You can pick up off brand Benadryl for a couple dollars for 25 tablets.

Again, in *most* people it makes them sleepy. Like always YMMV.

The best home remedy is Sex. This is what I was taught in med school. seriously. it works. a glass of warm milk is a good idea too. I would avoid taking drugs if at all possible. STAY AWAY from nyquil, it is a poor choice for sleep effects and should not be used regularly.

See a doctor if it continues to be a problem, there are some great sleep medications out there, ambien is a good choice. if ur gonna take drugs, take something prescription.

Don't take benadryl, it's made for allergies, not putting people to sleep. The best thing to take is melatonin suppliments. This is a natural chemical found in your body that helps regulate your circadian rythms.

Funny, the hospital pharmacy my wife works at gives out benadryl to help patients that can't sleep.

Those are for one time deals, melatonin helps to regulate a health sleep cycle thats continuous, and it doesn't leave you drowsy all the time.
