How do you guys use your sick leave?

I get 15 sick days a year. If you don't use them they are carried over to the next year. I currently have 250 sick days saved up.

I am given 1.83 hours of PTO for every 2 week period.
I am also given 1.53 hours of vacation for every 2 week period.

Vacation requests are often not granted due to business needs. So when I have something going on where I need a vacation and it's denied, I take PTO.

I have 6 hours of PTO and 14 hours of vacation right now.

DO you get the pay for those days that you don't use? That's how I've heard about places that have set amount of sick days.

Horray for kids who think they know everything! Differentiating sick and vacation days has advantages. At my company, the carry-over policies differ for different types of PTO. I can only carry over 5 vacation days to the next year without special permission, but I can carry over as many sick days as I want. This is so I can build up sick days and use them to supplement my company's short-term disability policy.

You live in California, right? I believe California law requires employers to compensate employees for unused paid time off, no matter what type it is. So your school lost nothing by having a teacher use her sick days.

Edit: Using sick days at the beginning/end of a vacation or before a long weekend is not a smart idea. It's obvious to your employer that you're abusing them.

I'm not saying the school lost something. I believe it's a broken system to use sick leave because well people use it in the end for non sick reasons. We lost by having crappy subs and so we learned nothing back in that class if my memory serves me right. So yes we the students lost because people abuse sick leave. Now when the tables are turned and I get sick leave... that's a different story But yes once again I believe it's unethical to use them for the wrong reasons.

It's kind of hard to explain how ours works... I work for a Wal-Mart Distribution warehouse, and their 'system' for being sick is different than any place I've ever seen. We have what they call a Performance Matrix, and each day we call off(for any reason, doesnt matter), we get 1 "occurance". Well you can only rack up so many of these before they fire you...BUT...after 6 months, each "occurance" falls off. So lets say you call off twice in January, 6 months down the line, those days will "fall off", and you'll be back to square one. This makes for a lot of abuse of their policy, but they made the rules, so whatever.

I'll have 7 years company time in September, which means I'll get 120 hours of vacation(we work 10 hour days, so basically 3 weeks), 2 or 3 personal days. Every paycheck we also get 2.x sick hours, which roll over each year. I currently have 167 sick hours, and once I reach 192, instead of getting sick hours, I get personal hours to rack up.

Its confusing to explain. If I can't get a day off I need, I just call off. No big deal.

Hi, kranky!

You used to be able to use them toward being eligible for retirement, but not anymore. Now you can use them once you've qualified for retirement to add to the calculation of service to receive a little higher percentage of your income average. Hardly anyone does that though because the amount it increases your retirement isn't much.

The way most people use them is to pay for medical insurance once they retire. So many unused sick days can be traded in for so many months of coverage. They're pretty valuable that way. I just hope you can still do that when I'm ready to retire.

I get 14 sick days a year. I am allowed to use 10 for no reason at all. The rest must be with a doctor's note.

They accumulate to infinity if I don't use them. People near retirement generally have well over 1000 hours of sick leave, and take weeks of it a year.

I've been here two years and I've yet to take a sick day.

I understand people just need a day off sometimes. Maybe they're just exhuasted or need an extra day to get themselves together. Employers should recognize this instead of forcing people to lie just to take the day off.

Sometime a day of rest is all you need to keep from getting sick enough where you need to take multiple days off.

I use mine for family emergencies. For example, I took all 40 hours I get this year to spend time with my wife in the hospital after her surgery. I'll have to work sick if I fall ill myself anytime before Jan. 1, 2009 now.
