How do you guys organize your MP3's?

I haven't sorted my mp3's since they fit on two cdr's.... now I have 18.5 gigs... some songs have up to 5 duplicates and their tagging is disgraceful... I've been using MusicBrainz and the Godfather to start bring it under control, but I need better methods to find duplicates etc....

How do you guys do it?

i just have all mine organized by artist and album, there alot of folders but it is the easiest for me.

yeah, windows is furious that I have a directory with 7000 files.....

mostly artist/album folders except for single songs by artists i don't have many files from. those are just in the root folder.

I do it all by hand, except for the tagging, for which I use ID3-TagIT. I have a directory called Music and inside that, I have I think 6 more directories named #-C, D-G, H-K, etc. so that all the files aren't in one huge, slow-loading directory. If I have a complete album by an artist, I have a folder called [Artist] - [Year] - [Title] and inside, I have filenames like [Artist] - [Track Number] - [Title].mp3. If I don't have a complete album, then the files are in one of the 6 root directories and named like [Artist] - [Title].mp3. I've had a couple of other naming/organization conventions but I've had this one for about a year now and it's definitely the best way to do it, in my opinion.

in theory, I have them organized by genre -> artist, with the execption of when I've ripped the entire album, in which case full album folder -> artist -> album

in practice, I haven't sorted my newly ripped MP3's in months, so they're all unorganized in the main folder. I keep meaning to get around to organizing them one of these days... I think about all the duplicate songs I must have and shudder.

z:\multimedia
-->subfolder: Mp3
---->subfolder: Artist
------>subfolder: Album

Some general folders like
\comedy
\unsorted

Etc

I don't really download singles, as I have entire albums on my hard drive...so everything's just by artist. I should start organizing them by date, but oh well, too late now.

It doesn't really matter that much, the music I listen to I also own on CD and CD >>> mp3. But otherwise I've placed most of my music in 5-6 genres and afterwards by artist.

1 directory. Most are just Artist - Song.mp3 but for full albums I have Artist - Album - Song.mp3. Works fine for me. Only 1187 mp3s though.

Every album is cataloged with pictures, then I use Foobar2000 database to play and search for whatever song I want to play.

Nice setup, including the Luna Element theme :beer:. I was never able to get Foobar to play nice like that so I continue to use Winamp 5.08 and foobar only once in a while.

And my structure looks like: C:\Music\Artist\Title\ , with the exception of singles and one hit wonders, which are just thrown into C:\Music

In my music folder, I have genres (classic rock, death metal, heavy metal, oldies, mainstream, classical, etc), and then band names, and then all the mp3s of that particular band in their respective folders. Bands with only a few songs are put in the proper genre without adding a band name folder.
