How do you guys like the 300gb Maxtor Maxline III?

How would this compare to dual/single raptors? Its almost exactly as fast, and in some cases faster, right?

Opinions? Anyone have this?

Dude just buy a hard drive allready! 🙂

Im biased against Maxtor based on bad experiences with their products, so I wont give my opinions other than that.. There really isnt that much difference though. Three seconds shorter in long load times is really all you will notice between a regular 7200rpm sata hard drive against a 10k sata raptor.

^^ lol, this is so hard for me. I dunno what i should get, first somone says one thing, then another. :\ I figure its a pretty significant part of the PC so i should figure out what im doing 😀

dude, get it. you already know its better hten any 7200 8mb buffer one out there, and it performs as well as the raptor. only difference it that the raptor loads faster in games and etc. would you rather have more space or faster load times by a few seconds?

I'm with everyone else...if you want to fork out the cash, based on the reviews I have read, the Maxtor III is a great drive.....and hopefully it won't die on you too!

If you need 300GB of storage, get the Maxtor. If not, get something else, because the $/GB cost is very poor compared to smaller drives. It's that simple. No one else has a 300GB drive available, Hitachi has a 400GB, and everyone else is 250GB or smaller. The Maxtor is not faster than the 7200RPM competition, and certainly not near the Raptor in performance, so don't waste your money buying it for performance.

Are there going to be lower GB versios of the Maxline III drives? I don't need a 300GB, but I wouldn't mind a new 120GB model...

I'm pretty sure that MaximumPC said there will be (or is already) a 250GB version of this drive. It kicks ass, btw. 🙂

Wow... forgot AnandTech did a review... according to their results, even without NCQ it's right up there with the Raptor... hmmmm... a Maxline III may just be my next hard drive...

Personally I have had nothing but bad experiences with Maxtor's.Will not touch them again.
Sofar my WD 120GB 7,200 has held out good, but my next system I'm building I'm leaning towards Seagate for their reliability record, price, performance & quietness. Not to mention the warranty period.
Also I'd never touch any IBM or Fujitsu HD's again.Failure upon failure

Yeah, Maxtors seem to give people the most trouble, myself included. Seagate has really impressed me. There drives are so incredibly quiet, they have the fastest seek times, a 5 year warranty! If you really need 300GB, go with the MaXline. If you dont need that much storage, it wont perform any better than a Seagate or WD SATA hard drive.

I've never had problems with my Maxtors, but I don't buy based on hype.

Choose the one that gives you the best deal for the moment, because if you really
plan on making use of it, then eventually you will need to buy another, either to upgrade
into, or as a backup for the first one.

So are you saying performance isnt that great? I thought the benchmarks said it is as good as a raptor. Should i just get a raptor plus something else? Or even two raptors?

I've had great luck with Maxtors. I'd personally get the Maxline over the Raptor. I have a Raptor and now really think it was a waste of money.

I'm thinking the same thing... I'll probably keep my Raptor to use as a boot drive because of the low seek times, but I think I might get a Maxline III to use for games and storage and whatnot. (although I haven't really had good luck with Maxtors... I had 2 fail on me within 6 months... although I do have a 40 GB Maxtor in my 2nd rig that runs 24/7 and has been for at least 2 years)

Because storage reviews on Anand stink, and you should not use them as a reference for anything.
