How do you guys game on LCD's at non-native resolutions? EDIT - How do you set custom resolutions?

I'm the proud new owner of a Planar PX171M 16 ms 😀
I just fired up counterstrike and notice they don't offer 1280x1024 as a resolution and the interpolated 1024x768 resolution looks pretty bad.
 
Custom resolution if the game allows it or have black bars at 1024x768. I try to turn off any stretch to fit type options if possible.
 
when I used to play CS I just used 1280x960, that looked fine on my 1280x1024 native LCD.

someone here said 1.6 supposed to offer 1280x1024 as a setting.
