That's the general idea but I think it should specified as ridiculous aftermarket alterations, like bodykits and huge wings/stickers etc.

Although, about 45% of ATOT'ers call my car rice.

An object that has been modified in a way to make it look ridiculous.

Really? I don't consider your car rice.

That pretty much sums it up.

Check out RiceCop for good examples of what constitutes rice.

Well, at the time it still had a damaged right rear door and white guage faces but otherwise the same. I've also added a roof rack since then.

I also define it as an attitude, which can sometimes be developed when said ridiculous modifcations are done. For some reason a "ricer" thinks his car is a gift from god and he can anyone in a drag race. And then when he loses he proclaims "I'll still get you in the twiztiez! y0!". Ugh, don't like them much.

I always thought that the biggest contributor to a car's rice factor is the addition of a loudener. I hate those damn things, and where I'm from, only asian people have them - hence the term "rice".

ie a slow stock car with a nice clean body kit and a few performance mods wouldn't be rice to me. Not everybody can afford fast cars. NutBucket's is border line, I wouldn't say it's rice though.

3 basic criteria:

- First one was already mentioned, aftermarket mods that do not increase performance. These are generally tolerated as long as they're tasteful or OEM. It's really the mods that decrease performance, like large heavy bodykits or oversized heavy wheels that really make a car rice. Unpainted is even worse.

- Excessive badging, like decals and vinyl kits, or putting emblems that don't fit your car (like an Si badge on a Civic EX) are rice.

- The most important IMO is when you could have gotten a better car for less money. For example, you buy a $15k Civic and drop $20k in mods in it, and think that makes it a $35k car. Sorry, no. You should have bought an STi, Evo, 350Z, or G35 in the first place.

Yeah, but then you get into aesthetic sensibilities, and becomes difficult to generalize.

Rice = Modifications which look gaudy and don't help performance. The tackier the car looks, the more horsepower it can make over stock while still being considered rice. Some of the gaudier ones, this for example, could make in excess of a thousand horsepower and still be considered rice. One reason there's such a negative connotation though is that most make no more horsepower than stock. Another reason is that 95% of ricers are teenagers, who of course are hated by everyone, and with good reason.

Sort of. There are show cars and go cars... IMHO, each respectable in their own right. Rice, to me, are cars that look fast, try to be fast, but are just plain slow.

All go, minimal show for me ;)

Expanded further/subtyped:

Claiming that said ugly show and "performance addons" massively increase HP/tq/handling/other aspects of car - besides my desire to longshot it with a 40mm HE round on-camera.
