Earlier this morning I reformatted my Win Me. Then I installed Win 2k pro. For some odd reason when my computer starts up it asks WINDOWS 2000 or MS WINDOWS. When I select Windows it just takes me to the dos prompt. Does anyone know how to get rid of this?

EDIT: I would also like to find out what the win 9x msconfig equivalent is for win2k

There is an option within Win2k that will let you modify the boot up process, but I can't remember where it is. If I find it again, I will edit this post.

***EDIT*** Found it. Go into System Properties in the Control Panel. From there, click on the Advanced tab at the end, and click on the button at the bottom that says Startup and Recovery. When you are in there, uncheck the box that says, "Display list of operating systems for..." That should do it for ya. Now that won't actually uninstall your version of Win98, but it will get rid of the bootup screen.

Also, you can copy the msconfig file from Win9x over to Win2k, and it will work the same. You will get a couple of errors when trying to open it, but it will eventually come up. I beleive the file is located in the C:\windows\system directory in Win9x.

At that prompt can you type win to get into Windows? The option in 2k that WoodchuckCharlie spoke of is in.. Start.. Settings.. Control Panel.. System.. Advanced.. Startup and Recovery. You can remove the dual boot completely by fdisk /mbr But that will clear your entire boot record so you won't be able to boot into 2k at all, so that's not really a good idea. :p

I may be all wrong here, but If I understand you correctly,
You just don't want to see the boot screen menu, but only want to boot up into your default o/s.

If this is so, I believe that if you edit the file "boot.ini" on your c:\ partition, change/delete the lines that call for anything except your default boot partition.

You have to enable view to be able to see this hidden file to do this.
Make a backup on floppy in case you don't like the results and have to copy the boot.ini file back to c:\ via dos boot disk.

I don't think this will eliminate the boot menu, but you can set the delay time of that menu to 0 and will barely notice it.
This will be obvious when you edit the boot.ini file.
