You have two easy options:

1) I would recommend applying for a SECURED CREDIT CARD
? approval guarantee
? set your own credit limit by depositing a minimum of $300, up to $5,000. A certificate of deposit (CD) will be established in your name and pledged to secure payment on your credit card account. Your CD will earn a competitive interest rate and will be insured by the FDIC
? low annual fee, but no application or processing fee
? benefits: worldwide acceptance, ATM access, toll-free customer service, $100,000 automatic travel insurance, and 24-hour fraud protection. Plus, your secured card works like, and looks like, any standard card. Use it to create or improve your credit history. After 18 months you could qualify for an unsecured card
? you can be approved if you're a permanent U.S. resident, are 18 years old with a valid Social Security number, and are up-to-date on all existing accounts including taxes. Any judgments or bankruptcy filings must be discharged

2) Or if you cannot save up the initial $300 deposit, ask a parent, brother, sister, neighbor, friend, co-worker or homeless bum to co-sign for a credit card with you.

After you've been approved, here's what you should do:
1) Always pay off your credit card in full every month to avoid paying interest charges.
2) Always make your payments on time, not 1 or more days late.
3) Never go over your credit limit.
4) Repeat steps 1-3 for 12 months.
5) Apply for a regular unsecured credit card by yourself, you should be approved with no problems. Close your first credit card.

When my wife moved here from Australia November 2001 she had zero American credit.

She started out with a small $500 secured credit card with her credit union.

Almost 2 years later, she has a 3 credit cards with limits totalling around $7,000 and has never paid a penny of interest :)
