How do you get a non-payment removed from your credit report?

Called up yesterday to get pre-approved for a mortgage, so they did a credit check. Apparently there is an oustanding dental bill listed on my credit report saying that I never paid it. Due to the amount, she said it could impact my approval for a mortgage. I'm almost positive I paid it, but it was several years ago. After I got off the phone I went to go call up the dental office to ask about the details of it and see if I could find proof that I did in fact pay it. To my dismay, the dentist no longer exists.

Anyone know what I can do to get that amount off my credit report?

dispute it in writing with the credit buereau that is listing it

they have 30 days to verify the info is correct. since the business doesn't exist, that is unlikely. so they should remove it.

i.e. write a letter and tell them to take it off/tell them it is wrong
