How do you get rid of the WINDOWS> in the dos window to get just C:\ instead of C:WINDOWS>? I thought you typed .. but no such luck. Thanks!

If you don't want to have to type cd.. or cd\ or cd/ everytime, you can go to the program properties of your DOS prompt, and set the "Working" directory to C:\ instead of the default C:\WINDOWS

Cool, never knew that Goi.

I use DOS every day also, in Win2k. I find it easier to work with files(delete, move, copy) at the command prompt than I do in Windows.. Heh..

Yep ! For me too I use Dos to delete fils or directories I know where they are instead of using the big windows explorer !! :) ;) :)

The only problem is that its 8 bit...

I grew up with dos, and to see anyone ask this question, seems utterly stupid, but i guess if you started somewhat later than everyone else, you wouldn't know, all you have to do now is get windows to make a boot disk, throw that in, throw your cd in, go d: then type setup, thats the most dos usage they've probably had. anyway, sorry to harp on ya moonbeam.

Later.

No problem. In fact that trick works for all Windows programs. If you wish the program to start at that directory, just put the path in the "Working" directory and it will start at that directory. I also use DOS on a very regular basis, mostly for file management and networking stuff(ping/tracerts). The explorer is cool and all for many file transfers, but DOS provides a very quick and dirty way of doing things, which I prefer for some operations.

Factor5, If I were worried about looking stupid, I wouldn't have asked. :). By the way, what are you talking about here: "...get windows to make a boot disk, throw that in, throw your cd in, go d: then type setup...". That sounds pretty complicated. What's it do? :D

The cool thing about questions is that sometimes you learn things you weren't expecting. I didn't know that what I was really asking was how to change directories. Now I'll remember the cd command cause it stands for Change Directories. I didn't even know it was a dos command, I just thought it was some arcane thing you did to get to C/. Ah, the light of day. Hope you didn't see my 'how do you print what's on the screen question.' I hated to ask, but I got tired of using a pencil to wright settings and stuff down.

It's better to ask a question and be criticized for being "stupid", than to stay quiet and continue stupid. Revealing ungleaned education is never stupid. Thanks for the sincere answers. I learned a couple of things as I am sure others did also.
