How do you find a good gym for first time working out?

I'm in southern california (san fernando valley), I want to sign up to a gym. I'm 18 so I can't afford anything expensive, I supposed I'd have to sign a 1 yr contract or whatever. What should I look for? Do they help you out at first? I basically want to build my chest, abs, neck, and arms.

if you're in college, check out the gym at your college, might be already included in your tuition

Simple. Go check out a particular gym for five consecutive evenings. If there are hot chicks working out there every night, and not so many guys that could squash your puny skull, then you have a winner.

Oh, and they have to have lots of free weights, too. Those machines suck much ass...

if you've got a good bod that you're lookin to maintain, make sure there are hot chicks there.

if you've got an ugly bod that you're trying to build up, go to some place with no hot chicks so you don't embarass yourself ;)

lol

Just go and *try* it out. If the gym has what you want and the people are easy to talk to and *offer* advice and give good advice then thats good.

Best thing to do it hook up with a mate THAT ALREADY DOES train though. And he'll tell you about it. MAKE SURE he *does* know what hes doing though and he just doesn't know *bits of this and that*, or thats not going to be too good either.

Have you got a friend that works out?

If you do then see where he goes and ask him for some help. If he doesn't seem to know much then I'd go and try out a gym. You want to learn correct form and technique RIGHT from the start.
