There are several different ways, these days they have a little machine that can tell you. I remember back when they pinched your calf!

The most accurate method would be to go to a hospital and get a DEXA scan. I have no idea how much that would cost or whether or not health insurance would cover it, but it is the most accurate.

Another method would be the caliper method, which is reasonably accurate, but you need someone else to perform the measurement, as it is pretty difficult to caliper yourself. Some of the sites are impossible to reach on your own.

You also have bodyfat scales that use your body's electrical impedance to measure bodyfat, but these are probably the least accurate.

At my gym they do it for free, you just have to sign up. And they have some sort of machine that does it. But I'm still questioning it's accuracy.

Here are 4 things that are needed to be done to get a 'more accurate' result:

1) not eat or drink for four hrs before the test
2) not exercise for 12hours before the test
3) urinate at least 30minutes before the test
4) lie down for at least 15minutes before the test

They will at best mention not to drink for a 'few' hrs before the test, IF at all.

If you have your own scales at home, have a go and see what results you get when you don't do the 4 above things. But then it may come down to how accurate they are in the first place. Either way if you do the 4 things above, you can at least use your scales to TRACK PROGRESS.

This is MUCH like normal scales. Most scales are at least 1-2-3kg out. The only scales I trust are competition scales. The others are all f0cked. And then you are wearing clothes, trainers etc.
