How do you feel about Motorcycle helmet laws?

Personally, I think they are B.S.

They don't protect the other guy, they just protect the wearer. If the motorcyclist doesn't want to wear one, why should the state say he must?
I feel somewhat cut off from what's going on around me wearing a helmet.

I find it exceedingly odd that they would pass a helmet law and NOT a law requiring goggles or eye protection of some sort. THAT protects the other guy!

While I think that not wearing a helmet is stupid, I don't think it should be forced

it's their own choice, maybe darwin will teach a thing or two 😀

helmet should be the rider's choice, but not having eye protection can affect riding ability if something hits the rider in the face, so having that on should be law.

As for protection laws... people are dumb, and people need laws to behave correctly (i'm obviously in the Hobbes camp).

The governemet has no business telling an adult on what to wear for safety from Motorcycle helmets to seatbelts.

The reason for helmet laws is because good taxpayers' money goes into getting the EMTs to scrape your brains off the pavement 😉

That said, I know what you mean about it being more fun without a helmet 🙁

Ever catch a bug in your eye riding a motorcycle? Or even a bicycle for that matter?

It's hard to concentrate on ANYTHING other than the fact YOU HAVE A BUG IN YOU EYE!

You loose control. THAT endangers everyone out there, not just the rider.

On the one hand, I think that it should be peoples own choice to be unsafe if it only affects themselves (good argument to have all drugs legalized here I think).

On the other, I see the point that it costs taxpayers money when motorcycle riders don't wear helmets and so incure higher medical costs when they get in a crash (or do drugs, etc.).

CA used to have the no helmet law, but frankly the number of motorcyclist deaths went up with the law..
Its a safety thing.. the problem with the no helmet law, its open to abuse..

John smith goes to a yamaha dealership, buys a R1 with cash and wants to pull stunts like in the movies biker boyz. Ends up killing himself when the first turn comes around.. okay maybe his possibity of surviving might be a bit more if he wore a helmet, but in a helmet less state he thought he was god and killed himself.

The problem is if anyone one shouldnt wear it (or make it optional) it should be harley riders or experienced riders.. but the problem is even experienced riders crash.. or something comes up and wearing a helmet is one less thing to worry about it..

Further more the whole thing about eye protection, CA requires it if you ride in a 1/2 helmet. I have hit a bee a hit speed, its not fun.. that was on my visor. I had a bug hit me once when i was going 10mph.. (visor up) and my it hurt.. my cheeks for hours.

In a country with a national health care plan, I could buy that argument. But here, it just don't wash IMO.

I think it should be a choice. However as I think more (oh no not again) I can come up with good reasons for it not to be a choice.

1. Frivolous lawsuits. Against manufactors or persons involved in an accident.
2. Costs for processing a death or injury
3. Stopped highway traffic.

I guess my point is.. For such a little thing we can hopefully avoid larger problems. The first one is really what gets me.

What about bumpers on your car? I don't like the look. Fvck the government for making it a safety feature, they can't tell me what I can and can't drive. If I want to drive a huge rocket propelled metal spike, that's my business.

I think it should be a law. For a couple reasons. First up, one of the guys I ride with actually was an EMT and he said the motorcycle accidents were absolutely horrendous to respond too and all of the people that died were from a head trauma. Dead people are also quite expensive and time consuming as well. The only thing worse than a cycle accident was the 3am accident where a drunk driver gets into a head on collision with another car.

Next up, as noted earlier, stuff hits you in the face while you ride. Once you get up to highway speed and then catch a small rock in the face, few people are going to maintain control of the bike. All of the crap that bounces off your car in traffic hits you right in the face if you are on a motorcyle at the time. This can be helped greatly with a windscreen, however usually when people refuse to wear the helmet, they forego the windscreen as well.

Everyone I ride with wears a helmet, every time. Even experienced riders can dump a bike, since it is not always the riders fault.

A drivers license is a privilege not a right. Who do you think pays for the uninsured, non helmet wearing motorcyclist medical bills when he gets brain damaged and requires medical help for the rest of his life ? Last time I checked, the tax payers footed the bill if the person had no money to pay for it. Therefore, if you must ride a motorcycle, you should be required to wear a helmet.

*Edit*
Personally I prefer a minimum of four tires, two doors and a roof. I don't own a motorcycle and I do not ride on them. I don't hate them either, it's just not my choice for transportation.
