Seriously though, I believe strongly in freedom of speech. A few quotes for you all:

"If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise we do not believe in it at all" - Noam Chomsky

"I may not agree with what you say, but to your death I will defend your right to say it" - Voltaire

note - that is the only thing Chomsky has ever said that I agree with...

no this has nothing to do with that, i'm trying to make serious topics. and ummm this is a public forum btw.

Too many think that Freedom of Speech means that they have the right to be heard. Not the case at all.

no it doesn't mean that, but it does mean excatly what it says, you can say whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want.

Accually, you do not have those freedoms. You have the right to speak in public, so long as it is peaceful. You do not, however, have that same right if your speech is going to incite violence either on yourself or another person(s). If I were to say Stiler, you are an idiot. That would be protected, because it is an opinion. If I were to preach about Hitler in front of a Synagogue, thus provoking violence, that is not protected and I can and most likely will be arrested. When you are arrested, you have very very few rights then my friend. The point is, if you are able to speak AND what you say is able to get you arrested, it is NOT protected by freedom of speech.

Edit: I too am 18, and graduate next week. But I do not speak up without having some sort of base arguement. Please, as others have said, think before you speak. Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool then to open it and prove it to them.

Actually I think they would be surprised at how little we cherish all of the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights.

I think they'd be even more shocked at the rights not enumerated in the Bill of Rights that we've pissed away. I think they'd kick themselves for not making the Ninth Amendment just a little more clear.

Our freedom is indirect. The Bill of Rights was an imposition on the government's authority rather than a direct "here's-your-freedom-have-a-nice-day" document. So "freedom of speech" just limits the government's ability to legally control certain things you might want to say... but it's not absolute.

No, I think we should abolish freedom of speech -- at least for awhile. I'd like to shut some people up.
