I just purchased the Collectors edition for GW:Nightfall (it was my birthday present to me) and it is pretty neat. There are some "Extra" things within the game, a soundtrack cd, better book, etc. Nothing that really screams "Buy Me" though.

Why they call it collector's edition? games ain't no collectibles. They go into the trash couples years later regardless.

As long as the game content is the same, I don't see the harm. Now if the CE has extra content that affects multiplayer, then they're asking for problems.

I got the CE version of Company of Heroes and thought it was pretty cool. Had an extra DVD with interviews, etc., and it came in a cool tin case. For $10 I thought it was nice.

the world of warcraft CE was pretty good, map and artbook plus dvd on the makign of i think plus it included the game on DVD and cds

by far the coolest though is the ingame exclusive pets, you cant get them unless you bought the CE and when i play and pop the pet out people still stop and ask me where they can get one...the mini diablo and zergling are pretty cool so is the panda

I've bought two Collecters edition games that I can recall... Quake 3 in the metal box & more recently Prey, but because Best Buy was out of the original edition they knocked $10 off the price so it cost me the same amount anyway.

But in case you missed out on some massive phenomenon such as half life, or c&c, collectors editions or game of the year editions are a great thing to pick up. I missed out on half life as my comp sucked back in the day :(

So in conclusion... theyre ok.

I thought that usually CE's come out at the same time as the normal editions. Happened for Guild Wars, FFXII, etc.

Suppose they do somtimes. Im just griping about the ones that come afterwards that i dont get as i bought xxx game in the first few weeks.

Thats my feeling. There's been a lot of boneheaded moves lately to try and squeeze extra money out of people without upping the initial purchase price. Collectors editions are one of the few that I don't mind. The DVD thing is annoying, I'd forgotten about that little move. I actually didn't bother buying a DVD player until oblivion came out because everything was still coming on CDs anyway.

Its when they scism the player base that is what pisses me off by creating multiple versions, or giving some players an advantage because they paid more. If the games themselves are the same and the CE just features some extra stuff is when I'm all for them.

CEs are usually enormous rip offs. Me and my friend have various running joke references to computer game CEs. It's a very versatile subject of a joke. If someone mentions warhammer i can joke that I will use the pewter figurine I paid an extra $20 for when I bought the CE of (recent game). If someone mentions looking up something on a map, I can joke I will look on my cloth map I paid an extra $20 for when I bought the CE of (recent game). And if someone mentions wanting to watch a movie, I can offer to show the 2 minute making of video DVD that came with the CE.

The pewter figurine one gets the most mileage, because we like to bring it up any time a collector's edition is announced.

Typically, I will only buy a CE if there is more game content. My only exception has been Oblivion. In most situations, I have no interest in artwork, behind-the-scenes videos, or little knick knacks.

Most CEs are just like others hace said: a rip-off. Most are last minute money grab ideas like Prey (omfg, figurine!), Doom 3 (omfg, figurine)!!! Then some just make you go wow: Age of Empires 3 (art book, big box, guide, soundtrack, DVD), Oblivion (nice package with map, a septim, extra 'history/story' book). ~only 2 CEs I've ever bought, and got the AoE3 for only $35:). All in all, no one is forcing you to get it, so unless they screw you with the CD\DVD bait and switch, it's all good.
