They screw the loyal fans that buy the game on the 1st day of release, and reward the fans that dont buy it until later. We're not all hardcore fanatics that will buy a game twice for a free t-shirt or a pen.
But in case you missed out on some massive phenomenon such as half life, or c&c, collectors editions or game of the year editions are a great thing to pick up. I missed out on half life as my comp sucked back in the day
So in conclusion... theyre ok.
I thought that usually CE's come out at the same time as the normal editions. Happened for Guild Wars, FFXII, etc.

If the average gamer's budget was equal to mine very few games would ever get produced for pc. So if Collector editions are a valid way for publishers to make it more lucrative, then more power to them.
