You said that Newton and Einstein are possibly geniuses.

No I said I could possibly produce the equivalent of Newton or Einstein's work. I said I don't consider any of them genius.

Ah, I see. It's late.

I honestly don't think anyone you mentioned was really a genius.

How about Bobby Fischer or Friedrich Gauss?
closer to the idea of "genius"

So what is a genius? I think you just got too worked up with western society's notion that math and verbal skills = genius.
Go study more about what intelligence is and you'll find that it's much much deeper than that.
Wait, so now you are on some higher plane of understanding? You assume to know what I have studied................

What is genius? There isn't such a thing.

Nice job beating around the bush.
So now I'm beating around the bush by saying there is no such thing?

Tell me....do you have to make a well known contribution to be genius? Is it IQ based? You're the one who believes in it....tell me what it is.

This I want to see.

Also, I'll throw out the standard 'Who were you before you were banned'?

I would like to see it too. I'd probably be a much wealthier man. Unfortunately the paths of my intelligence and an unknown that clicks have not crossed.

I'd rather not sa...I mean what do you mean?

It actually would help if people could specify what they mean by "genius". Here are some defintions:

Definition of Genius
Definition of Prodigy

It seems as though "prodigies" are geared more toward young people. With these definitions in mind, I'd have to agree with virtualgames0. Genius does exist, however it has very little to do with knowledge, rather it has to do with intelligence and creativity.

Since genetics plays a large role in the ability to develop your intellect and creativity, it would be the primary factor in determining who is a genius and who is not.

Saying there are no geniuses is basically saying that everyone is equally smart.
A genius is just someone with an extranordinary level of intelligence.
Now intelligence isn't just being good at math and IQ stuff.
It also includes creative thinking, problem solving, and "street smarts".

So if Beethoven is able to create music that can really hit a person's feeling and emotion, then he's a genius as not many people can do something like that.

I have been labeled as a person with an "extranordinary level of intelligence". However like I said the paths of the unknown that clicks and my intelligence have not crossed. A person with lesser intelligence could have that experience and be labeled by his peers as a genius while the person that didn't have the experience goes unrecognized. This is not to say that only people of high intelligence can have such experiences nor is it to say that Einstein was a drooling retard in the right place at the right time. Of course people on the lower scale are likely not to have epiphany while observing the world. At the same time I doubt people of high intelligence are likely to do so either. Enter the myth of genius.

The key to genius is keeping an open mind to everything, always.
It allows understanding on every level through multiple viewpoints.
It also allows understanding without finality.

Being able to keep learning creates genius.

Very simple. Survival of the fittest, in the opposite effect. We keep everyone alive now, so everyone gets to breed, and thus pollute the gene pool. It is essentially de-evolution.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to include my point... With the process of de-evolution going, there aren't any more geniuses.

a person who can learn from any medium, by any method, and at any speed

(story time)
When I was 12, I was doodling in my notebook one day and "invented" a perpetual motion machine using a generator and charge-altering cylindrical electromagnets. This was just after we were learning about normal magnets in school and I was able to design a working electric motor without even seeing one in real life! brushes and everything. I figured out that minus friction, this thing would be able to run forever using generated vs. used power statements. I was pumped and ready to patent until my dad told me they beat me to it lol
(another story)
since freshman of high school, i've been tossing around an idea where a black hole is composed of energy, not mass. if it weren't for my undiagnosed ADD and newbness in quantum physics equations, i'd be somewhat done by now :p
Hate to break it to you, but nobody has invented a "perpetual motion machine".

Unless, of course, they don't obey the laws of thermodynamics on your planet. :p

So IQ is what % genetic? All the geniuses are from a long strain of other geniuses? There are fewer today? An endangered species? Extinct? If anything there would be more with your line of thinking.

Isn't it true that Einstein's brain is quite a bit different than the average man's, though? Doesen't that count for something?

No, it more like the fact that the gene pool was less polluted during their time, and the chance of a genius at this point in time with the current gene pool is considerably less, and increasingly so as time goes by.

Less polluted? So the original human genes were the "goal". They were the true geinuses?
Smart people don't seek out smart mates? We have less "geniuses" now?
