How do you explain Norton System Works or Norton Security 2005 slows down computers?

How would you explain this in layman's terms to customers that want to know why their computers are running slow.

Do they still slow down systems?

Way back the effect was very obvious, but these days those apps rarely even register 1% cpu useage.

Yes they still slow down systems. My GF's dad has an 3200+ xp with 1 gig RAM and that machine crawls when you try to multitask with System Works on.

VirusScanners set their cpu priority rather high and tend to take 100%? Most can be throttled, but this means they take longer to complete and most companies consider virusscanning to be an extremely high priority.

I find that hard to believe.

The only proof that I can agree with is that Norton System Works uses way too much ram. I have the similar setup as above, but I don't feel like it is slowing down my system a bit. I bought I gig ram so I can use them, so why worry if I got lots of them to spare? Of course, I would recommend people to stop those functions if you are gaming or video/graphic editing.

As for now, I only use Norton AV Corp and Outpost FW and I save almost 40+ ram space...

I've got a P4 2.8 with a Gig of RAM. I don't even have to turn off SystemWorks when I play HL2. I'd say there is something else going on with his machine.

Agreed.

If you want me to help you explain it in Layman's terms you're going to have to explain it to me in technical terms.

The Norton fairies some times get drunk after they eat all the viruses on your computer. When they're drunk, they're slow to react.

kinda off topic, but does Symantec antivirus corporate edition slow down computers like Norton, i know they are made by the same company, but i use the corporate edition and i find it much better than norton and does the same thing, plus it is free through my school

Simple, all Norton products are bloated piles of crap that no person who cares about the speed of their machine would use.

Back when Norton System Utils was available during Dos 6 times it was a good product, but not since then.

No, I still recommend Norton AV Corp. It has small footprint and no bloated junk/GUI to interfere the usage. It is simple and direct. You can get v9 on Buy.com for only $29.99 or less about a month ago. So, I'm pretty sure you still can find it for a good price. It uses the same engine, if not better, than the Norton retail lineups.

Last time I checked, Norton AV corp only scans outlook, and lotus notes mail. No scanning of traditional pop3 clinets like Outlook Express and thunderbird.

Nah, Norton AV scans all Pop3 clients since v8. I use it w/ my Thunderbird and it always scan my message...
