How do you eat unshelled seeds?

Sunflower seeds, Pumpkins seeds, ect... Almost everyone shells them between their teeth tosses the shells and eats the seeds. However I have seen a few chew them shell and all. I've never understood why anyone would like them like that, all that hard, sharp shell in your mouth yuck.

Toss a hand full in the cheek and start cracking one by one. Kinda like chewing gum but with more tongue skills.

I never could understand eating the shells either. I was eating some edamame with a buddy and watched him eat whole pods. There's something not right with that guy.

What you are referring to is known as "in-shell" or "in-hull" seeds, as distinct from "de-hulled" or just "seeds" (not "kernels"). "Unshelled" sounds like they don't have a shell/hull.

I split them in my mouth, suck on the shell to get at the salt, and then spit them out.

I don't eat sunflower seeds because it takes too much work for such small reward. Pistachios on the other hand, I will try to open even the ones that are sealed shut because they're so good.

Normally just eat the whole thing shell and all, I'm far too lazy to split apart and spit out. Only if Im really really bored do I spit the seeds out one at a time.

This is the only way to eat sunflower seeds.

Yep. I Do that with all seeds, you really get a lot of flavor off the hulls.

Yep. I Do that with all seeds, you really get a lot of flavor off the hulls.

Plus it's fun and makes ya feel like you're in the big leagues in a fantasy dream with that all-star hero of yours stepping up to the plate, shouldering a massive wooden 4x4-of-a-bat behind him, and spitting a big ol' wad out toward the pitcher in a mocking "go ahead... I dare ya" sort of glare 😎
