If you are really that worried that it will "go bad" just open it up and take out the hard drive, before coffee spreads to it.

I told her that, but apparently she can't do that because if she turns off the PC and it doesn't turn on again, she is screwed.

I don't think she understands that the hard drive can be put in another computer...

First of all, turn the laptop off. You don't need the laptop to work if you want to get the data off of it. I mean hell, it's a hard drive. Slave that bad boy and you'll get the data off at your leisure.

If you leave it on while the coffee goodness gets into the drive, she'll be screwed permanently. Tell her to turn the damn thing off, take the damn hard drive out, and who gives a holy hell if the laptop boots or not.

This'll also give her an opportunity to try to mop up as much of the coffee is possible, and maybe even save the laptop.

Or you could keep the laptop on and wring your hands until it passes the point of no return. That'll work.

Unless she has files all over the place, wouldnt the 'My Documents' folder be the best place to start?

yeah, seriously shouldnt turning it off be the absolute first thing to do?

I mean if your car is on the freeway and smoke starts coming out of the hood wouldnt you pull over and turn it off instead of flooring it to the mechanics.

That seems to be her plan...

Not necessarily; I know that I don't have anything in Microsoft's set-up folders. Nothing in My Docs, My Pictures, My Folders, My _____... nada.

Mwilding: If that's her plan, and you're not in a place where you can physically take the laptop away from her, I strongly suggest that you say any data loss which occurs will be entirely her fault, since turning off the computer would be the easiest way to solve the issue.

Most folks who arent like us (power users) tend to keep things in all the respective Microsoft places. About 80% of the PC's that come in here for whatever reason, the owners store all info where Windows puts it by default.
