How do you desolder something from a motherboard?

Mainly onboard sound connectors?... 😕

I don't remember how the onboard sound connectors would look on the motherboard, but if they go through a hold on the motherboard from top to bottom, like the Socket A does, I would probably use solder wick.

No offense intended, but if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing it (unless you know the MB is "fer sher" a goner either way).

A friend of mine used to desolder chips off of Comodore 64's. His method was to take a butane torch heat the pins of the chip and then tap the board and the chips just fell out. Worked like a charm.

I'd use side cutting pliers instead if they worked.

None taken... since its not mine... 😀 my friend just wanted me to ask for him since he's going to try and fit his board into a custom case. He was going to use those vacuum bulb types but just wanted to know if there's a more efficient method.

my vote would also be for desoldering braid or wick, and keep the length of time to a minimum that the heat is applied since I'm gathering that the mobo is still good.

Would a 30W soldering iron be good enough then? or will it take too long to heat up... and end up damaging his board?

30 watts will work. I'd use a desoldering braid.
