Stop being a moron and tell us:

1) What is the error you get
2) Why do you think this is a virus

You're not trying to delete "importantwindowsfile.dat" because some stupid email says "OMG, I sent you a virus that's not detectable by any virus checker" are you?

it's how you assume everything you say is the correct and nothing else can be. Why the hell is he a moron? Did you not read about bugbear, it creates dat files in %windir%\. Oh wait, you didnt need to read that because you are too smart

He's being a moron by assuming we can help him with no information. How the hell are we supposed to help him if we don't know what error her gets?

What did I assume was correct? I asked two questions and gave a *possible* scenario. I didn't assume anything was correct, and I have no idea where you got that from.

Talking about people who need to read better, I guess you missed this?

Gee, I guess bugbear isn't detectable by ANY antivirus software, huh?

i think its virus cause its located in my kazaa software share folder and not windows .dat

i scanned all files with norton, avg and bugbear and klez removal tools but it didnt detect anything, my outlook is definetly infected cause it keeps sending viruses and some of them come back refused to me

Windows has plenty of .dat files. For example, there's one that tracks like every site you've ever visited with IE. They are not usually viruses, but I'd like to know how to delete them anyway. I think the only way to do it is to restart in safe/DOS mode, delete the file(s), reboot, and Windows will create a new, empty file to serve the same purpose.

Edit: The file I am referring to is the "index.dat" file in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5" directory. There is another "index.dat" file in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\History\History.IE5" directory as well.

Are you sure it's actually sending viruses? Some viruses come masquerading as Mail Undeliverable messages - the message itself always says "check attached file for original e-mail contents" - that's how they try to get you to open the attachment.

Which antivirus software do you have?
What is the exact error message you get? Some DAT files are part of Windows or running apps, and they can't be deleted while Windows is running. Is Kazza running when you try to delete these files?

Kazaa stores partially downloaded files as .dat files. You can't delete them while they're downloading because Kazaa is using them. Quit kazaa if you want to delete them, but, be warned that your downloads wont finish.

Who feels stupid now, iamwiz82?

with two virus files attached

Ok, but still some questions unanswered.
-What antivirus software are you using?
-What version?
-Is it up-to-date?

-What is the error message you get when you try to delete these files?

So, there are three "index.dat" files that record all the sites you've visited even if you've cleared IE's "History" and "Temporary Internet Files" folders.

In Win2K/XP, these files are located in these three (hidden) locations:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Cookies
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\History\History.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Am I correct when I say that the only safe way to delete these files is to boot into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and delete manually?

Hmmm...okay, so I deleted the index.dat file in those three directories and rebooted. Everything works fine, but those files didn't restore themselves for some reason.

Did you load up Internet Explorer? Are you sure those are in fact your temp folders? I changed my temp folders in WinXP so that they were easier to find.
