if you really care about the data, you better have a backup of it once you finally do a defrag.

especially if you have a large source controlled codebase on your computer.
sometimes bad things seem to be attracted to it/aimed at it.

There's a good test comparing the effectiveness of 10 reg cleaners here.

He ends up suggesting that EasyCleaner is the best free tool.

Notwe that his test results were published 9 months ago, so things may have changed since then, I don't know.

I use (I paid for license) Rose City Software's Registry 1st Aid myself, and am happy with its performance, although it doesn't place well in the above comparison test. Once I tried the popular jv16 reg cleaner & hosed my system with it because I was too aggressive in using it.

well you could do a sector clone (norton ghost, etc), or just a backup like I discuss at http://vampteam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7008
xxcopy or rsync (both free) can work great.

personally, I backup most data using xxcopy, and as for the C partition, I do a sector clone of it.
you could use these programs to clone C drive:
http://www.mondorescue.org/about.shtml (free, GPL)

http://www.partimage.org/ (free, can DL source)

Acronis True Image (not free, but can download a trial or demo)
