As it is with most any person or persons someone doesnt understand, homophobia is believing in a stereotype. A lot of people, believe it or not, still do not know one gay person.
Some wives think they will threaten their marriage. What does that tell you about their marriages?
Some parents believe gays are after the kids. There are a lot of gay kids from totally fundamental religious households. What does that tell you about fundamentalist moms and dads?
I know many fathers of gay children feel this stigma of sorts, that others will wonder if that father had something to do with turning the kid gay. That is why many fathers disown gay children. That fear of association. Even if that involves their own flesh and blood gay child.
Homophobia is not unlike any other race or gender phobia.
It is that "unknown" of another person. That fear that often boils up into pure hate.
In todays world, republicans have elevated and taken that fear of the unknown to new heights.
And YES, I say and point at republicans as a singular sector, since we do not see this coming from the left or the democrats.
At least not in the massive harmony of unanimity we see it coming from the conservative right sector.
Do right wing republican politicians actually believe in this homophobia wagon train they ride upon? ... NO!
Do republicans believe in the benefit they will gain for winning elections... YES!
There are still large numbers of very isolated people in America, culturally isolated people, that are easily fooled when homophobia is exploited. Republicans know that means votes. Republicans play up to that ignorance very well. They have the game play down pat.
So they use and abuse the ignorance of that culturally isolated segment of the voting public. It has worked very well for them. That is why they will forever continue until they no longer see any payoff. Until their game is finally exposed.
