How do you define a 'Fast' computer and a 'slow' computer

My friends who know nothing about computers say either a computer is fast or slow and thats it. How exactly do you draw that fine line between a fast and slow computer? Its pretty damn stupid if u ask me.

I put mine in the middle with a +/- of 200mhz.. which I define as my medium. Above that is fast. Below slow.

Slow = a lot slower than mine

Good = Doesn't take an hour to open/close programs
Bad = Takes forever to open/close programs and crashes a lot...

Rating speed by clock speed is stupid, as applications always require different amounts of processing power. Windows 95 does not require the same amount of computations as Windows XP. Meaning a Pentium II will be blazing fast on Windows 95, but definitely won't be too snappy in Windows XP.

Software keeps getting more demanding, and the hardware increases to compensate. So a fast computer today obviously will be a slow computer tomorrow. Get the drift? It's not a set in stone thing. It changes. You can't buy a "fast computer" and then say you have a fast computer... two years later. *eye roll* seriously the mentality of some people really does make my eyes roll

fast computers have that "snap"

you want to beat the sh!t out of slow computers because they spend more time "thinking" and making whirring/buzzing HD noises while they search for data/clear the cache than actually function as a computer.

medium si between 1 and 2ghz
and fast is above 2ghz
then godly is above 3ghz

Fast = I get 20 ping, 100 fps, and lots of headshots.
Slow = I get 200 ping, 20 fps, and like a 1:50 kill-death ratio.

Fast and slow changes all the time. Software bloat always increases. Of coure what the computer does playes a big part. Some of the video encoding and stuff like that will bring the fastest computer of today to it's knees.

i don't consider things like "super computers" fast... i consider them "super computers"

i consider a P4 3.06HT fast... I consider an Athlon XP3200+ fast....

WTF! depends what your doing and other components...

If you're running the net & email, anything above a 1 GHz is fast, but if you're trying to use the same machine to play half life 2(when it comes out ) then you are SOL & and slow as fvck. If you have a 2.2GHz P4, but only running 128 MB of ram and you're trying to video edit, etc. you will be there awhile. Its not just black & white like that, you have to take into account other variables.
