How do you decide whether to get a DVD or Blu-ray?

I rent from Netflix and pay the extra $2 a month for BluRay discs, so you can bet your ass that I get BluRay discs instead of DVD's whenever possible!

If you meet the viewing distance/size of screen for telling the difference between DVD and Blu-ray, I would get Blu-ray for any modern action movie or documentary or any film where visuals play a key role. Favorite movies of mine (like LOTR - Extended version when it comes out) I would not hesitate to get on Blu-ray, and "Reference" quality Blu-rays I would strongly consider getting (see PQ thread on AVS forums).

i got blu ray as soon as i saw planet earth in HD at my friends...that was my goal. i waited for deals, and got a 23: 1080p lcd for the computer, then a bd drive later...and grabbed planet earth and life for ~$35 each on blue ray

totally worth it, between that and an extra buck a month for netflix blu ray. didnt think id like it...and some stuff i dont care about, but its totally worth it for some things, as well

I use a very simple formula. Is the movie visual and FX driven? I go Blu. Is it story and character driven, with little CGI or epic vistas? I go DVD.

blu-ray, all the time. no exceptions at all. if the price is too high, ill just wait and pick out another movie (in blu-ray of course) to get in the meantime.

Why would that matter? In every way possible the Blu-ray is going to be better.

It's like asking would you rather have a decent cheeseburger for next three meals or prime rib for one and go hungry for the next two.

If you've got a fixed movie budget then you have to pick and chose how to spread it out. There's just some movies that don't get the same bump in visual/audio enjoyment that others do. Save money on it them and get more movies overall.
