How do you decide what to major in at college?

I am trying to decide what I want to major in. When i first got out of high school I went to DeVRY for a while doing EET. It was a little more technical then i wanted to get with computers, so i withdrew from the course. I have taken a few years off, getting my A+ and whenever I get around to taking the test my Net+. But now I am feeling like I would like to go back and get a degree. I currentlly work as a part time employee for UPS. Its hard work, but good pay, excellant job security and room for advancement. So I am not necessariously doing this just to go out and get a better job.If it happen it happens, but I really just want to have another option if I choose to take it. I just don't have any idea how to decide what to do for the rest of my life. I like messing with computers, but not to big into programming. Networking is okay and if I go into computers in would likely be something in that direction. But really I just like building, upgrading and stuff like that, and its hard to make a living doing that. When i was in high school I was in a program that allowed me to learn autoCAD and even take some college classes for it. So I have proficient use in autoCAD, but again I think something like mechanical or civili enginerring would just get to technical and boring. So I am considering architecture. During my time in the program I was given the chance to work on a few plans for people houses and I really enjoyed trying to make the houses functional, interesting and ultimately what the people wanted it to be like. Now I only had to deal with the designs. I didn't have to worry about electrical or plumbing or any code issues or whatever, my teacher got the final draft of the blueprints, so he got to deal with all that. Butlike i said, i did enjoy it. Out of my class there 8 or 9 people working on these designs. A couple of which were seniors with an extra year of experience then me. And out of 3 of the designs, my design was chosen by 2 of the families. The third was a good friend of mine and ultimately it was his design, but I gave him a lot of help on it. I was busy working on something else at the time or I would have been working on that. I also got an award when i graduated for how good my architecture skills were. I am not trying to float my own boat, since I didn't do as well when I had to design machine parts and crap. I am just saying I think I might be able to do it well. I am basically looking for any people with experience in architecture to tell me what they think of it. What besides designing buildings and houses, do architects do? I am just trying to decide if I think i will like that as a career, thanks.

Simple--just decide what you want to do with your life and plan accordingly. ;)

I was a pre-med so at first my major was biology. Then I noticed that I was taking enough chemistry for a double major, chemistry and biology. I think, with two more chemistry classes, I could have gotten a chemistry or biochemistry degree.

Heh... i was there. Didn't stick to it and bailed to engineering instead... most of my friends did though... they're taking the MCAT this month.

Well, a lot of the university's gen ed programs are designe so that you'd have a sample of the various fields around campus . . ..

well I majored in what interested me, what I liked, etc... (history/political science)

it made it fun, but not easy to get a job, so I had to go to grad school

a lot of people will say do what you like, but I say try to be practical too. I'd recommend accounting, boring I know but you can get an mba later on and branch out.

I met some Architecture majors, who went to the Rhode Island School of Design btw, not some podunk school, and they complained about the job market. Apparently its not that lucrative and you never really get to design what you want. Me I'm not an architect but I'm repeating what they told me.

I started out as electrical engineering and decided that it was just boring. Then, I went to Computer Science and Engineering, but I didnt want to take the math and extra EE, so I just went to regular Computer Science. I knew I didnt want to just program and I had always been intrested in Psychology, so I picked up a major in Psychology. Now, it is my third year and I am double majoring in CS and Psych and I plan on doing research in cognitive science of some sort.

I would say just go and take an intro class or 2 in fields that interest you. You could probably do this at a community college or something to save money and you should get an idea of what you really want to do.

Personally I believe that if you don't know what you're going to major in, you shouldn't be going to college. It's a good way to waste a lot of time and money while gaining no experience in anything useful. I think that kids straight out of high school who really have no interest in college other than "well, my parents want me to go and I'll make more money afterward" are better off spending a year or two working, figuring out something they like, and then going to college than they are jsut going into college and taken a bunch of BS classes and getting in debt from tuition.

not everyone takes out loans for college notfred, but yea that isn't a bad plan, probably would have helped me out a bit
but in reality can you work in every field that interests you? Theoretically college exposes you to a bunch so you can decide there.

Yeah notfred, that was kind amy situation. Parents wanted me to go to college. I chose a college DeVRY because I do like computers. But EET is just to technical, so I drop out, not too much debt though, it was paid off a while ago and I have only been out of school for 2-3 years. I will not be going back to college until i have a major picked. I am not doing this for my parents, they know I have already got a good job, so i guess they aren't as wooried about it. But I would like to at least have another option. LIke I said, I am not going back to school just to get a degree and then go out and get a job in that field. I will get the degree and continue to work for UPS. I may apply for the occasional job if it sounds really good. But I would for the most part stick on at UPS and see where that takes me. But I don't want to get board with it one day and have my only other option being another factory job. Plus while I am at UPS, they will give me money for tuition, so I might as well use it, right?

Like I said I really like computers. I think programming would just get to tedious to be any fun. I think I would get more enjoyment out of networking and stuff like that. I really do like working with autoCAD too, just not totally sure what iw ould want to do with it. I wouldn't mind designing houses or maybe even buildings, but thats about it. Designing small parts for machines and what not doesn't sound fun to me, but I did do a lot of stuff like that in my 2 years in the program. I don't know, i guess I have to look more at whats available.

That's one hell of a run on paragraph. Hmm. Bad English skills... You're a perfect fit to be a programmer.

I am an English major now, but I might switch to theater because I can't get any English classes and I want to make tv/movies anyway and they have a lot of production classes in our Theater dept. I am also thinking of becoming a lawyer.

Cliffs Notes?

I just chose what I thought was my favorite class in school and went with it. Hence, History. *braces for interesting comments*
