How do you deal with loss of Virtual Machine?

I re-installed XP after a hardware upgrade. Soon after, noticed some websites complaining that I needed to enable JAVA????

Well, the options for java weren't even in the IE6 advanced options anymore.

after some searching, I found the explanation that because of the SUN lawsuit, M$ no longer includes VM in new XP releases or service packs.

I googled up a copy of M$ VM and installed it and java works fine now.

Is there a better way for me to have dealt with this?

What did you do?

TIA.

Actually the newest version of SP1 removes Virtual Machine from XP, you did the right thing by finding the MS Version (I hate Suns version)

Thanks all!

I kept a copy of the d/l I found (msjavx86.exe) and will just add that to the 'to do' list next time I have to re-install.

The only significant problem I had without VM was the ComCrap file transfer utility for my webspace wasn't working without java enabled.

Which would be why MS lost the trial, I would assume. Java is pointless if it requires 1 specific VM to work.

before I knew what the problem was, I had gone to dslreports to use their speed test thing. It complained about no java and I followed a link to the one they were recommending. (sorry, I don't remember what it was called). anyway, I installed it and thought everything was fine..... BUT a couple days later, I noticed the content manager for IE6 wasn't functioning anymore. (checked and re-checked the browser settings).

Unfortunately, I had just been through a long and painful exercise learning how to set up accounts and permissions to keep the horny teenie boppers out of the porn and was really pissed when I watched IE6 let me down. (imagine that)

anyway, M$ gave me no way to re-install IE6 (which really sucks, btw) and that led to my latest re-install of windowsXP which eventually led me to the VM thing. (I am not a software guy.... you can imagine how much trial and error let alone a good bit of luck it took to even figure out why I had no java and find the fix.)

all I remember is that a taskbar icon was opened when this particular java app ran, and it was mostly pink and white..... If this is the SUN one that is being recommended.... well, it didn't work for me.

(I just went back to dslreports and checked... it was the SUN java that ferked up IE6 (or vice versa ???)

The problem with java is mainly with the newest sevice pack.....SP1a If you use that service pack there will be no java installed. I have an OEM disk with SP1 and have had no problems with java...so if you do another reinstall in the near future you may want to try to install SP1 instead of SP1a

well, I prefer to keep up to date on the service packs. But as you read (above) all you have to do is download the microsoft VM file and keep it. you can simply install it after the SP1(a) update and you are right back in business.

I highly recommend this approach over letting your OS slip behind, one SP after another. It will come back to bite you.

link to the file if you want it
