How do you deal with it when everybody hates your boss therefore they hate you for being hired by him?

I have this boss here in the IT dept. A lot of people don't really care too much for him. They go around him, above him whatever. He's been in 10 years or so. I've been hired by him (fresh out of college) as a young person and wanted to get my career set I follow everything he says. Therefore I'm noticing people are seeing me as a small version of him and resent me for it.

Excell at your job, keep your nose clean and out of your bosses ass...just do your fucking job and show them you are worthy of their respect.

pretty much. i was called one of "jerry's kids" (after the owner who hired me) for a time at one job. as it turned out, i was one of only 2 "Jerry's kids" who ever did earn their respect doing exactly what Boomer said. some jackasses never forgot but would rarely say anything because most employees had gained respect for the job i did.

in the end, that was my favorite job.

In other words you are a "Yes sir, thank you sir, may I kiss your butt again sir" guy?

You can either ignore what others may think of you, or just act normal. Everyone in the office probably was hired by the same boss, so that's not it.

I don't brown nose

It's just that is what's going on. I'm quite young and I think people feel it's easier to deal with me (negativley). I'm doing quite well. I've only been here a year and my boss wants me to put in for a promotion. But I'm asking if I continue with my boss I will get a lot of shit from employees if I don't I probably will have little chance for advancement.

I notice in my office there are groups or clicks that forum...

make your own path.. it's understandable that you want to follow what your boss says to the letter right out of school but you'll learn quickly how the office functions and then at that point you go your own way. do what you're paid to do, do it well and don't complain or talk poorly of anyone and you'll be fine.

it just takes time.

Yeah IT at my company gets little to no credit for what they do. That's starting to turn around a little bit though. Working on the other side of the fence now after having been in IT I try to help dispel these notions people have. Computers can seem so complicated to people that I think often their frustration at the machines ends up vented to those required to maintain them or program them.

I work at a hospital. It pisses me off. We have these doctors. Who don't know shit about IT. We serve them almost. One thing they always say you can't get far working in a hospital in IT. Since the doctors know little therefore they won't request what they feel is necessary. So we have to make suggestions for new systems since they know little but control the situation the system gets f---ed up when it's implemented. So they way things work in a hospital is not the way systems actually end up working.....

I'm a simple guy, I do what the boss tells me to do and do it the best I can. I don't give a crap if other people get bent out of shape because I'm doing my job. I go to work to make money, not friends. I have a life outside the job, so people resenting me wouldn't bother me so much.
