How do you deal with a jilted buyer on Craigslist?

I owned two Radeon 4850 video cards (1 new, 1 used, 2 different brand) and decided to sell them off after getting a 4870 for a good price. I posted the new one on CL for $140. First offer was $100 and I responded saying I would wait for a better offer. 2nd offer paid the listed price so I informed the first it is sold. I then decided to post the 2nd card for the same price. Same guy offered $100 for it. As an added bonus, there's this post on CL soon after my post.

Keep in mind the Newegg link he provided is of a open box item he described as new and that it cost almost $9 to ship. So I posted a rebuttal noting that and it gets flagged for removal. Jeez that is fair. I didn't want to deal with it anymore and removed my forsale post. I made the mistake of using the same wording in my post as my previous successful one and had my phone number on it.

How would you guys handle it?

You shouldn't expect more than $110 for that on CL anyway. Why quibble over $10. Buying from some guy on CL doesn't come with nearly the same return promises that newegg offers and that is worth a fair bit of money.

Your first problem is that you rebutted. Just flag his post and ignore it. You're in the For Sale section, if you're not posting an item for sale in it then it's a spam post. The For Sale section isn't for having conversations with people - that's what emails are for.

I would do nothing and continue to list the item. Odds are you'll sell it.

Heres a thought, dont sell used items for the same price as it goes for at any online store! You aren't newegg.com, you cant demand the same price for the item that they do.

You are the reason I hate craigslist.

I would rather pay $9 more to buy from Newegg than buy from your shady ass.

Oh and let me guess, you also try and sell rear projection HDTV's that are 5 years old at $800 because you "paid well over 2,000 for it" back in 2003. Give me a break.

I have to agree with you. I think most people on ebay/Craiglist/whatever have insane expectations when selling (un)used merchandise. They know their item is in excellent working condition, so they feel they deserve 95% of the retail price for it. They fail to recognize that they are a much higher risk than, say, Newegg. Of course, they're the same people that turn around and offer you 10% of the retail price when the tables are reversed.

Solution? Ignore them. No reason to get worked up over it, though.

Of course, the upside is that when I post my "gently used" items for fair prices, they look like a steal, so they sell fast 😉 .

-I don't expect to get $140 for it. Around 120-130 would be reasonable, but I will not sell it to this guy even for $140 because he's using an underhanded tactic.

-You're right, SunnyD. I should not have posted a rebuttal. I already flagged his but I think you need multiple flags to get removal.

-I decided to just waited it out til his post expire and post it again without my phone number and worded differently to avoid him.

I figured it better to post from the high side and let people haggle down. Sometimes it's an experiment to see what you can get it at. Otherwise it's not worth it for me to let it go. And yes my ass is shady because it doesn't get enough sun.

Then don't buy it from him. Simple solution 🙂 He can ask how much ever he wants, it's his business.

You're going way overboard with this. I'm selling a fairly recent item and nowhere did I say I don't haggle. The problem is someone is using an underhanded tactic to try to weed out other potential buyers.

And there is the crux of the problem. People think craigslist is a "business". Its not a business. Its a place to get rid of items that you dont need anymore. Craigslist has become overrun with people just like him who think they deserve to get 90 - 100% of the money they paid for the item back. Guess what? You don't.

And this is a good thing.

Face it, someone who would buy the item from you @ $140 is uneducated about the actual selling price of the item. Why on gods green earth would he buy the item from you at the same price he can get it at a legitimate store?

He is trying to help out those who might think it is a good deal. You are trying to take advantage of those who think its a good deal. Its simple.

Sorry but I would not even e-mail you. Way to close to retail with no warranty/return option etc...

People who do their research will get rewarded with a deal they're comfortable with. I strongly encourage that. There are folks out there who may only want something locally. Quick turn around without paying taxes. The tech savvy crowd who wander the hot deals forum are not my target demographic.

Exactly. Your target demographic only includes uneducated consumers who don't do their own due diligence. This other guy is helping them out.

Yes, I consider it a rip off when some shady person over craigslist tries to sell me an item that I can get at Target for the same price.

And honestly, what non-tech saavy person is searching for Video cards on craigslist? Come on now.

So which one of us is going to post a new ad with the link to the new, warrantied one for $139?

I don't know why people here are arguing about the price. The man can ask for any price he wants. It's as simple as that. I don't care if you can get a new one for around the same price.

Then you move on to the next listing and don't get sand in your vagina 🙂

Then he shouldn't get a sandy vagina when someone else points out the fact that he is trying to rip people off.

lol, people on Craigslist are nutty. I needed to offload my old notebook, and wanted to price it cheap enough that I sold it easily without haggling with people. It was a flawless HP with 2.0 Pentium M, 1GB DDR2, 15.4" WXGA+, 160GB HDD, Wifi, DVD+-RW, leather case, etc. I posted it for $125 and got a bunch of immediate responses, about a third of which were : "I'll give you $100", or "Will you trade for a PS2 + 7 games?", etc. LOL. Had cash in hand in about 30 minutes with a person smart enough to just pay the asking price, and it was worth my time not to hassle with it further.
