How do you damage a monitor?

Does anyone know how to damage a monitor purposely without actually throwing it out of the window? Sony refuses to replace my monitor which is yellowish on the right side. It's very noticeable when working with light colors. My whites also aren't as bright on the rigth side. Anwyays, the Sony technician said that it's normal for such a "high-definition" monitor, which I think is BS. He said the earth's magnet field causes this problem and the only way to get around this is to position the monitor in a different location of my room to minimize the distortion. How crappy is that? Since he didn't find anything wrong with it, he won't replace it under warranty. I thought maybe if I can get another problem that is unfixable to show up, then he would replace it. I'm currently forcing 120 hz right now but it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

Try another tech? Sometimes I have to call 2 or 3 times before companies actually hear me out..

I actually went to their service center to have the thing fixed and spoke to the guy who decides whether the product needs to be replaced or not.

Let's see, magnet should do something. Just tape it onto there for a day/week or however long. You could try running it in really hot conditions, but since it is winter already that's out. You could shake it really fast and hope something get's loose. It's really hard to mess up a monitor without dropping it or anything of the sort.

A magnet will magnetize the grille, which changes the color pattern. This can be fixed after a degauss or two. A manual degausser will do an even better job.

However, a really strong magnet can actually BEND the grille. Even if just a little, you can't fix it.

<< Just put the monitor face up against the refridgerator door for a while. >>

What tells me you have done this before? I just opened mine up and fried a IC with 50V.

I would put my 700NF nowhere near a magnet. I know a guy with one of the strongest magnets in the world. Put two of them together and it is basically impossible to separate them by pulling each one apart. You have to slide it apart. Now, one of those magnets would be perfect for the job. And if you open up the monitor and maybe strip the screws a little they might notice it and say you tampered with it.

Heres a trick I developed working at CrapUSA tech department. Get a power cord cut the end that plugs into the comp. off so it has bare wires. Plug the other end into the wall. Now just drag that sucker across the circuit boards inside the monitor. 100% gauranteed to fry something :D

take the signal cable..
hold the plug in one hand
hold the cable in the other about 3 inches down the cord from the plug you are holding in your other hand
bend and twist it like crazy
:)

"Like your hand"

LMAO :D

Could you do something simple like bust one of the prongs off that the power cord plugs into?

Also try, turning it on (outside) pure water into it, let it fry, then let it dry. Take it in and say "I think it nuked itself."

If multiple attempts at degaussing the monitor (a bulk tape eraser does a great job, but keep it at least 3" away, and turn it on or off only when it's at least 6 feet away) don't clear up the uneven color, then the "beam landing" wasn't adjusted right at the factory. This used to be done on Sonys by placing small magnets around the yoke (electromagnet near rear of picture tube) and front perimeter of the tube, but it's possible that there are built-in digital adjustments accessible through a service menu (secret combination of button pressings may bring it up) or a special serial connection made just for service.

I suspect that you didn't speak with a real technician because even slightly trained people in tech support are now often referred to as a "technicians," and some are even called "engineers." One Panasonic support "technician" even told me, "I don't know what convergence are," and he suggested that the serial link for service was through pin 8 of the video connector, an impossibility because it's for blue video.

If you just want to foul up the picture badly, try unplugging the monitor overnight, then move the yoke around and, if they're not sealed with paint or glue, move one of the tabs on the ring magnets at the rear of the tube. There are ways to ruin the monitor, but they're dangerous because they require shorting out certain parts, such as the circuit board on the back of the picture tube, the flyback, or one of the big chips or transistors. Don't do any of this while the monitor is powered on, and be sure to remove the shorts after the damage is done.

I think it would be better for you to protest to your credit card bank in writing to the special address for complaints because that gives very strong consumer protection and requires the bank to act on your behalf or refund the money. Also try PC World magazine's "Consumer Advocate" column.

One more from me.

How about putting it in a trash bag and then running it at max res. & max refresh? This should surely screw it up after a while.

true true.....but its fun reading this sort of stuff ;)

anyway, best thing i can think of (and very simple too): get a BIG glass of water and (you already know what im about to say) dump it on the monitor while its turned on........then stand back and see the fireworks (just make sure you take pictures and let us see em) ;)

have you tried to degauss it?

If that fails, just hit the on button really hard so that it breaks, then tell them that your monitor button is stuck... Worked like a charm for me! :):):) That's about the best news/way you heard or will hear.

casiotech has a very good idea. Hitting the button really hard and damaging the insides. That will probably be really hard to replace so they will just give you a new monitor or refund your money.

I think you can just sprinkle some water in the back ventilation slits of the monitor while it's on. The water would probably short out some components. Let the monitor sit for around 2 days for the water to dry. Bring the monitor to the tech and try to get a replacement..heh

Actually the thing about the earth's magnetic field is not bs. Have you tried repositioning your monitor? Do you have any unshielded components around the monitor? I think that damaging the monitor on purpose is wrong, not to mention that tampering with it voids your warranty. There are more mature and reasonable ways to go about solving things like this.
