How do you create an ISO of memtest-86?

I downloaded the zipped file memtest86-30.iso and tried to extract it into a folder to be burned onto a blank disc, all I got were 3 files in a boot folder and none of them was an ISO. I am supposed to insert a blank disc then extract the zipped file to the drive that contains the burner??

Your assistance please.

the downloaded file is a winrar file that I thought contained an image. Once I extracted it I got 3 files in a boot folder MEMTEST.IMG IMG file, MEMTEST bin file, and BOOT security catalog. Do all three files need to be burned or just the IMG file?

All three. Choose the create a bootable cd option in Nero.

Oops! Sorry about that. I initially thought that you only had those three files. If you have the .iso image, just burn the image.

You don't need to extract the 3 files. Just open up Nero, and select which ISO file to burn. ISO = CD Image.

well I'm still having some difficulty because nero express disc image wont recognize the .img file. I am trying to use nero to create a bootable disc but with no success. I downloaded the zipped file and extracted it to boot disc folder with 3 files MEMTEST.IMG (IMG file), MEMTEST(bin file) and BOOT (security catalog).

Did I download the wrong file for the iso? Winrar memtest86-30.iso. when I select nero express disc image or saved project I tell it to look in the boot folder I extracted the 3 files to and Nero wont show those files because they aren't neros files of type compliations or images. Im totally lost now, in the past when I have burned an ISO it has been a .nrg or .iso not .img

Once you extract the ISO you lose all the boot information in it, stop doing that.

Maybe you inadvertantly downloaded the inccorrect file. Make sure you download the zipped file "memtest86-3.0.iso.zip" under the heading "NEW! - ISO images suitable for creating a bootable Memtest86 CDROM" from Memtest86 - A Stand-alone Memory Diagnostic



When you unzip that file you should end up with one file called "memtest86-3.0.iso". Then you should be able to burn a bootable CD-ROM from it using Nero. You will need to change the file type Nero is looking for to *.iso - it does not default to it.

what are the advantages in burning an ISO/CDR of this program instead of just running it in Windows? does it give more accurate results?

You can't run it in Windows, it's not a PE executable. FYI the program itself is a modified old Linux kernel. And even if you did have a memory test app you could run in an OS, it wouldn't be accurate because you can't bypass the OS to really test the memory or see the real memory addresses.

The website appears to be down right now, but IIRC it's just an executable that makes the boot disk for you. He also has to provide the source since the Linux kernel is under the GPL so pre-compiled binaries would probbaly just be rawrite.exe for writing the image and a bootable kernel image.

How many tests is memtest86 supposed to run? I thought it was 7. It only got throught test #4 (32 bit) ran for about 4 minutes and then it just hangs. I couldn't even use the commands to Exit ESC c-confing. I could never get the cd iso to work correctly so I had to use the file to create a floppy.

any suggestions

I am able to run prime 95 for >10 hours without any errors

if it hangs, you have errors, so i suggestion new RAM, overclocking less, etc... Memtest86 is one of the most hardcore hardware tests available, so if your system ain't perfect, Memtest86 will let you know.

The basic set of tests is 7. If you run the full set it's 11.

If it's hanging on you (freezing) go into your BIOS and disable "USB Legacy Support", then run Memtest86 again. You should be fine now. Re-enable USB Legacy Support afterwards, if you use any USB input devices.

Thanks for the assistance. I was able to run the extended tests for 2 hours for a total of 4 pass. Do you turn USB Legacy Support" back on after using memtest86 or do you just leave it disabled?
