How do you contribute to the downfall of ATOT?

I'm not banned. Doing my part each and every day.

"I'm not banned."

We can always change that. Just say the word.

This forum & members are aging and nothing is being done about it. New kids don't join vb forums.
I simply don't understand all of the social media shit now a days. I don't understand why people have to use 3 or 4 different things that all do the same shit. I'm in a group chat with some buddies and they say shit like 'did you see my snap? did you see what I posted on instagram? you see my FB post?" Like why not just post that shit in the group chat or on just one of those? I just don't get it...

Yeah I don't get it either, and I don't get how those things are worth so much. When FB bought Snapchat or w/e and it was like 5 billion? Just insane.

Easy, everyone's self worth is tied to what other's think of them.

Need moar likes, btw, like meeeeeeeeeeee

I realize that, but that doesn't explain why they have to use 3 different social media apps. Why not just use one?

They all focus on different things. They might get lumped together as "social media", but it's not all the same thing.

Snapchat is for quick, disposable meme-type images with text to share with and message with friends. Instagram is all about photos you take, and sharing them with friends and also the rest of the internet (if you don't have a private profile) to get likes and comments on them. Facebook is for connecting with and staying in touch with friends and family, or even old acquaintances... or lately arguing with those people over random political crap. Then you have pure messaging apps like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, et al.

There's also Twitter, of course, which is somewhat a different animal. It's a syndicated messaging platform, and there's it's really all about the news feed. Twitter can be useful even if you don't want to be "social" on social media, since you can just follow a bunch of news outlets, journalists, celebrities, and whoever else you want to get updates from/about.

There's a lot of overlap with all of these social medial platforms, but each has a slightly different approach. They started to copy each others features, though, so there's some level of convergence. Live streaming, "Stories", short video sharing (this is what killed Vine), etc.

You can do all of that on Facebook though.

Everything you can do on these forums you can do on Reddit. Why aren't you there instead of here? 😛

Part of it is just different communities rise up in different places naturally, but also not all of these platforms implement features in the same way, nor do they all do it at the same time. Also having a bunch of features is nice, but it also means you are in danger of not having a focus on one thing, which can result in a cluttered interface or general feature bloat that confuses people or craps up your apps.

Facebook - despite being for college students originally - has skewed older over time, too, in part because of their desire to be a jack-of-all-trades, and also the network effect worked against them in a way since almost literally everyone and their mother is on it. Kids these days don't always want everything they say to be on Facebook, even if it's innocuous. Whatever cachet Facebook had originally has been lost, not just among young people but also the privacy-conscious and those who just hate the Facebook atmosphere as of late.

Because ATOT was before reddit lol. I can't stand reddit either.
