How Do you Change What Name Your Computer Displays on the Network?

Hi all,

I have Windows XP Professional. How would I go about changing the way my computer is displayed on the network. It is currently Charles's Computer (The-hive) and I want to change it to just be The-hive. Could you give me a clue?

Thanks for any help.

Once you setup Windows XP, you cannot change the computer name...

unless you go into Control Panel>System>Computer Name and click on "Change..." 🙂

Ya know, you could try something EASY

see you click on the "start" button in the lower left of your screen... its probably green.
then go up to "help and support", click here now
then in the screen that opens up, click on the button that says "index" up top
now type "computer name" into the blank provided
Now look at the results. You'd want the one that says 'Rename a computer"

the instructions it provides are VERY simple and explicit.

or, in other words, RTFM

Heh, I got another one. DBAFA. Don't Be A Fvcking Ass.

datalink,

careful on your computer name. I'm not sure about XP but in previous versions that was your netbios name and should be restricted to 15 characters.

LOL Spidey.

You mean he can not use this "Don't Be A Fvcking Ass"(a qoute form Mr DataLink7) as his computer name.

Oh Now I see what you were saying. The "Charles's Computer" part is just the so called "Computer Description" and only shows up on the network. The computer is named "The-hive." I should have made my question a little more clear I guess (though it is fixed now don't worry). I should have just asked how to get rid of the computer description "Charles's Computer."
