Because we all have control over our company software policies.

When Google released Chrome, my employer blocked the download and sent an email saying anyone that subverted the policy would be fired. Google was a... competitor, of sorts.

You should have congratulated your management for solving all the worlds problems. That's quite an achievement. It's the only explanation for them putting time and effort into a policy like that. There must be nothing important left to accomplish!

Use the David Allen method of Getting Things Done. :) They have an Outlook guide for configuring the application to use their organizational method.

Actually, given Google's privacy statement at the time and the nature of my company's business, it was a very relevant and needed action. The type of data Google was allowing itself access into could have compromised our business to the tune of billions of dollars in profit. And considering that you probably avail yourselves of my old company's services at least several times a month, this would have directly affected you if Google had chosen to misuse the information. On the right levels, corporate espionage is a very real thing.
