how do you buy good speakers?

I just got the supposedly "amazing" EV SonicXS's and was once again disappointed by a set of computer speakers. I guess it's all in what sounds good to you though.
anyway, I want to buy some good "real" speakers and I want to find some that sound good to *me*.

how does one go about buying speakers?
should I go to a store and listen to them? or will the store just set them up stupidly so they sound bad?
what should I look for? (brands, specs, etc)
how can I get good speakers and also get a good deal?
does the amp matter much? if so I need help finding a good amp. also, are certain amps good for certain speakers?

Reviews are a good starter. Good sound is all relative, and most importantly related to budget. Give us one and we can give you some pointers.

If your listening requirements are that high I suggest you go to a retail establishment that requires an appointment and credit check before they let you in. I'm sure they will be able to supply you with something that meets your elite auditory needs.

no more than $150 for amp+speaks
oh and I'm no adverse to buying used or vintage stuff (ebay, etc) as long as it still sounds good

I don't know if it's really at all helpful to try to describe what kind of sound I like, but basically, I like really "rich" "musical" sound with lots of mid-bass. and I HATE boomy bass. it has to be tight so you can actually hear what note it's supposed to be. that's why I don't like the EV SonicXS - it has barely any mid bass to round out the sound and the bass all boomy/blatty

This is for computer speakers

Klipsch promedias are good speakers, but brand new ones can run ya $$. Refurbs are 120-150, depends if you go 2.1 or 4.1
S2 midilands are possibly the best speakers ever. S2's are no longer produced 🙁 They have S4's now, but those arent as good. I have Cambridge Soundworks FPS 2000 Digital, and I'm quite pleased. got them for <100

edit This is a good review site

I'm afraid that for $150, your demands are pretty much overkill.

build your own speakers following guides from good audiophile forums

or first live with a vintage marantz receiver from ebay now, and save pennies for good speakers later

dude. mid-bass IS boomy bass. bass is thump, not boom. mid-bass is the boom in the sound.

hmmm.... I know nothing about sound, so thanks for explaining. I guess what I mean is I like to hear the kind of sound that a bass guitar creates - clean and unmuddied.

Klipsch or Logitech!

Not really...if you are serious about your sound there are alot more options

I'm talking about PC, but otherwise, yes, there are many other choices.
