How do you become a Mod??

I suspect some of these lifers are mods. I had a guy in my CS class 2 years ago, he posted on these forums. His username escapes me, cuz I don't think he posts anymore and I didn't post back then. He told me that he was a mod for some nerdy discussion board and that he would always laugh his ass off when he banned people and they would beg to get back in. I am not sure if he was a mod for this forum or not.
