how do you backup Outlook express e-mails and folders?

I'm doing a full windows reinstalation and want to make all my e-mail stuff up... any easy way of doing this?

You want to export to a file. From then on it should be pretty self-explanatory.

For Outlook Express it's a different path:

c:\windows\application data\identities\the_only_folder_there_with_a_bunch_of_letters_and_numbers\microsoft\outlook express\

If you are using outlook express, you also need to backup the following registry keys for each user on the machine. If you only back up the files, you won't have access to your e-mails, without a lot of jumping through hoops.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

When you restore the mailbox data, it must be restored to the exact same file system path. Oh, and the regsitry data must be restored before you first run OE - otherwise you will have to delete all of its new blank registry entries.

Don't forget to backup the address book - seach for *.wab

import/export works perfect for backing up my favorites. Never tried it with email though.

You can only export to Outlook or Exchange. The original question was how to back the messages up for incorporation back into Outlook Express.

PhylloDo, ok then, in Outlook Express go in the File Menu -> Import -> Messages -> Select the format you exported the e-mails -> Next -> Choose between All folders and Selected Folders -> Next -> Finish...

e-Backup Used this for about 2 years now. I backup to zip once a week. I had to restore twice and never lost anything. Simple, fast and FREE! If you want to register it's $15. I'm thinking about registering just because it's an awesome outlook express backup. It also backs up the address book and IE Favorites.

Ok, where the heck does Outlook put the file you exported? It won't let you select the location to export it to and it doesn't tell you where it puts it.

Ok do a search for pst files. My Exported file was named Outlook.pst but it's possible that it's not the same name with different versions of Outlook... (dont know...)

Anyway my file was located at :

C:\Documents and Settings\GeSuN\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

It's Windows XP path so it's different for other Windows Version...
