How do you avoid getting kicked in L4D?

I've heard of people kicking people on L4D "so that a friend could come". How can one avoid that?
 
Is it possible to re-join a game if you get kicked for someone else's "friend"? Like, by changing your name and then hopping back on?
 
Why would you want to join a group that doesn't want you? Or a group that is childish enough to use the "friend" excuse to kick you out in the first place?
 
It's an occasional annoyance, and just part of the usual pub scene. It's better if they start a private lobby with friends, then turn it public, but for various reasons the punks would rather kick a stranger.

This rarely happens to me, because as soon as I hear any hint of kicking, or "someone needs to quit" etc. I know there are rude kids present, and leave immediately. I also don't like to see a stacked clan, but as long as they aren't jerks about it I don't much mind taking them on with strangers.

Here's a tip, not entirely unrelated. You run into a percentage of decent, friendly gamers in random games, but sometimes you can lose track of their names or the server fails unexpectedly before you took enough notice, and you think "I should have added those guys." So take a screenshot (f5) upon starting, and now and then through a game as players drop/join.

I don't add tons of Steam friends, but I have added a number of friendly and skilled players that play frequently, so I get invited to games fairly often, and usually have someone I can ask if I feel like tackling an expert campaign, etc. Some of them I wouldn't have successfully searched if I hadn't taken a screenshot. I also have a quick launch shortcut to my L4D screens.
 
So i guess i'll just have to suffer from getting kicked until i get a good number of friends to play with on L4D?
 
You can't stop from getting kicked off, and it doesn't matter if they are the mod of the game. Someone can call a kick vote and if everyone agrees with their vote, you're kicked, but everyone needs to vote yes.

Also if you happen to pop into an active game, and if they ask you to leave because they want their friends to come in, why would you be a jerk and want to stay? Players get disconnected for staying idle to long while they go to the bathroom, or their isp is crapping on them. So they are just waiting for them to reconnect.

I play mostly pub games and maybe 1 in 15 games is where I can't stand my group of idiots, TK for fun or are a bunch of drunk jerks that just want to mess around, so why the hell would I want to stay?

In versus mode it's a little higher as it's much more competitive and with competition comes attitudes. It's really not that bad as I may make it seem. I found most players are cool, way cooler than say finding the players in Counter Strike or similar opposing games.

The caveat I have to say is though, I tend to play much later in the evening, like after 8 PST. Most late night gamers are cool, since most of the kids need to sleep for school the next day.

Why would you need to take a screenshot to keep track of your friends? There is an option to see the recent people you played with. Just do that.

When I was running my server, I had to kick people all the time due to the matchmaking BS... As soon as my sever went up, random pubbers would join, and I'd have to kick multiple rounds of people before one of my friends got in. Using the 'play with friends' feature seems a little better, but I'm no longer running a server, so I'm just doing the 'play with friends' thing and joining random dedi servers.
 
As soon as you see them going "kick X player" or whatever, immidiately kickvote someone (not the person who said it, just somone else) and they will get kicked off. This works like 75% of the time because people dont read the name being kicked they just hit F1 lol.

In Steam you can see the players you've recently played with and add them as friends, so you don't need to take a screenshot at the start of every match.

You could but if the admin is on they could just ban you.
The key is to get on people's friends list and play with a regular group of players.
If you are doing soley pubbing on this game you are missing the real experience, that's not to say that all pub games are bad but I always prefer to play with my regular crew over a pub game.

Where in Steam? Thanks, I've never noticed this feature.

Aflac, the only kicking "for a friend" I ever saw happens prior to launch, so telling him to "stop sucking" is useless advice at best.

Haha nice idea! 😀

I've only had this happen a couple of times but it has nothing to do with sucking or not.

Frodolives: You can get a list of players you recently played with. Click the Add Friend button on Steam overlay or from main Steam, then there is a tab or a note you can click to see a list of users you've played with recently. Sometimes the list contains people I swear I didn't just play with at all, but anyway it is very handy. Depends how much you play but it holds 5-7 days worth of previous players for me.
 
Thanks dura, there it is plain as day, just one of those things I never looked at. Unfortunately, an hour or two of TF2 will apparently fill that cache 🙂

But I'll keep this in mind the next time I think to add someone after a campaign.
 
wow i guess many people take it personally. it happens here and there, don't take it personally, first time it happened to me, i was like wtf but i realized people are just trying to play with their friends. what else do you want them to do?

if it pisses you off, then at least let out your steam by giving them some friendly-fire as you're being kicked, lol.

Again, the issue he is referring to is something that happens most always in the lobby. So minmaster, you are right that people are just trying to play with their friends, and after all that's the best aspect of the game, so the design of the lobby/matchmaking system is partly at fault.

If it were in game though, I still wouldn't do the friendly fire thing just for a laugh on the way out. You can get banned from a server or even a group of servers. Happened to a couple of griefers that joined a game I was in 2 nights ago.

Such an immature and unconscious rhetoric... stop sucking... are you joking or something?

Even if God himself/herself/itself would join my server and would play God-like I would gladly kick his golden stranger butt for a FRIEND to come and have fun. Isn't that figurative enough? What stranger is worthy enough to stay on a server I for instance would be hosting to take one of my friend's place and leave the said friend in the dust exactly? I don't care if the "random guy playing with me that's better than I am" can kill two Boomers when there's just one because he's just THAT good. If a friend wants to come then fuck the stranger and hello my friend.

And to answer directly to the OP, it's harsh, maybe, but you need to make friends and play with them to COMPLETELY avoid such things from happening, simply because there ARE people out there who WILL kick you because "you suck", and NOT because they want a friend to join. I myself voluntarily leave games without complaining or anything when I'm being ASKED to quit because I am taking a "friend's slot", that's fine, even if it's not true (how would I know anyway, and I don't have time to make an inquiry about that). When I'm not asked to do it I'm simply kicked. It's NOT fun, but you kind of have to deal with that type of stuff in on-line gaming.

Make yourself some friends to play with L4D and try to play with them in friends-only games and start or join a Lobby in which only you friends can be.

I guess I should restate my question. Since the original poster was asking for ways to force a group to let him stay (or re-join) a server after they have kicked him off, I have to ask, "Why would you want to continually try to re-join a group that you know doesn't want to play with you?"
