How do you acount for the decline over the last 40 years?

Kind of reminds me of a problem I heard in school about space travel. If it took multiple generations of astronauts to make a trip to the next star, then how does mission control plan for the crew and anticipate that the children can handle the task when they have not yet even been born?

It is a result of Politics forcing legislation and laws on things that they know nothing about - both sides of the aisle.

I resent Bush's attitude of '"l'll tell you what's good yor you, it's gonna be done my way."
Don't remember voting to make him my parents.

They also arent great leaders who inspire younger children to become just like them. Do you think they are gonna play a huge role in the history books 20 years down the line?

It's silly to want to become "just like" anybody. The concept of role model has become far too important in this society. The most inspiring people know that you could NEVER be like them. Maybe in certain essential ways, but never "just like" them. The achievements of really successful people are inimitable in certain ways.

Another liberal tactic. Insulting somebody when you are wrong. And, he is a president. You do not get screwed by an intern and then LIE about it to a couple million people.
Who you trying to kid? He's a lawyer and married and a politician and he did hanky panky? OF COURSE HE'S GOING TO LIE! Anybody who has a problem with that is a _____ hypocrit.

one word...LIBERALS.

In a word...yes. People are a lot more free today than they were 50 years ago when conformity was all the rage.

I don't know why people think its bad. I'd much prefer today's society over 50s society. And I disagree with the title. There many have been decline in some areas, but there has been enormous improvement in others. Overall, the change has been positive.

Of course, old people will never admit to that, they've been saying the "the good old days" crap ever since language was invented

Why do people think things are worse now?

I'd rather live in today's society, where I can say I'm an atheist and not have to worry about the McCarthy clan trying to arrest me for being a Commie.

Things are more real now, more human. The way of the past, the God-fearing, Daddy-is-king, wife-is-homemaker, good-children-speak-only-when-spoken-to, Cleaver family farce belongs in the past. I'm not saying living a storybook "wholesome" lifestyle is wrong, but rather being FORCED to live a certain way because the religious fanatics say so is very objectionable.

True, true....i'd say it's much better now overall.

increase of mass media's role in everyday lives and the pervasiveness of mindless entertainment. these two factors have allowed people to live life without thinking for themselves, without working productively, without any sense of patience, without a decent attention span, and has generally made this country lazy. lazy in more than one way. lazy in terms of always looking for the easy way out, like by cheating. lazy in terms of not wanting to think for oneself, which is why opinion based news is so pervasive. lazy in terms of exercise, which is why people are overweight. lazy in terms of thinking that other people will do the work for them, and on a national level, that other people will take care of this country for them. laziness is killing america, and my theory is that mass media and increase in sources of entertainment are the causes.
