I can't make it to class tomorrow because I was summoned to report for jury duty tomorrow. I need to write an email to my professor but I don't know how to start it. Dear Professor X just sounds too weird, plus i don't really like the professor anyway. To whom it may concern doesn't seem appropriate and hey of hi just seems too personal. Anybody know how to start this email? should I end wiht sincerely?

a college student should be able to handle a simple communication like this without asking for advice.

Professor --

Just wanted to let you know that I won't be able to make it to class tomorrow due to (fill in the blank). I'll be sure to get the notes from (whoever).

Please let me know if this is a problem. If not, I'll see you next (day of the week when the class meets next).

Thanks!

How about you just don't go and don't tell anyone? You have professors that actually care if you check in?

Heh... you're writing to tell him you're not coming?

That's a funny idea for me at UW-Madison where there's 100 to 500 people in my lectures :)

Use "Dear" when addressing, it's just a formality and shouldn't feel strange. Hey, I'm taking a Business writing class and it's what the Prof. taught us...

Old boy,
Read your article in Scientific American the other day. Be glad you got tenure when you did, it's obvious that you've slipped your cogs. Can't expect I'll want to read anything you publish in the future, except maybe for the amusement factor. Anyway, I figured I'd rather make a dollar a day listening to the dregs of society whining about their legal trouble than subject myself to your inane ramblings, so I'm going to be at jury duty for the next few weeks.

Good riddance. Looking forward to a far more exciting existance,
Student.

Professor X,

Wolverine told me to tell you that he can't make it to class tomorrow because he is stuck at an airport (something having to do with metal detectors). Since he is my only ride to school, I will not be able to make it tomorrow either.

I quite agree. It doesn't demean you at all to use the formal term, and in a way the formality of respect for his "office" places a burden on him (or whomever) to live up to their responsibility to be civil and above personal qualms.
