How do Republicans say they support the armed forces while attacking Kerry's service at the same time? How does it work? Support our men and women in uniform as long as they're not Democrats?

"I think him going to Vietnam was more heroic than my flying fighter jets," said Bush, who served in the Texas Air National Guard (search). "He was in harm's way and I wasn't. On the other hand, I served my country. Had my unit been called up, I would have gone."

The only thing to really contest, and not suport, was Kerry's disrespect to the military and his own medals after vietnam.

I don't know, you don't think that renouncing the medals your country has given you, then throwing them on the ground is not disrespectful to the military, and overall to your country?

It could be seen as disrespectful to the administration and overall philosophies that sent a willing soldier into harm's way.

Protesting foreign policy != disrespect for the military.

Besides, the government misled the public, did it not?

No, not particularly, depending on the reasons you have for renouncing them. Depending on the situation doing such a thing could be considered courageous.

If his unit had been called up he would have got another deferrment. Or got transferred elsewhere. It's what him and all his buddies did.

Kerry didnt disrespect the military. First, they are his medals. Second, disagreement with foreign policy (especially over a war he witnessed firsthand) is not disrespect. It's free speech.
