How do people run on greater than 1024X768?

Was at a friend's house earlier today, trying to fix his computer . . .

guy had a Sony 15" LCD . . . I couldn't see anything because the font was to small.

I dunno, I personally think that 1024x768 fits a 17" monitor perfectly. Anything bigger gives me a headache

1024 on a 17" is like the ultra-fake large type so that the audience can read the screen for hacking scenes in movies.

Anything less than 1600x1200 is unacceptably small desktop real-estate. Most of the time I use 1920x1440.
