They'll last you a lifetime as long as you don't lose them.

some people can afford to have others take care of their problems.

that said, i've got a 500 piece craftsman mechanic set, snap on impact gun, air ratchet, cylinder compression test tool, ohm/voltmeter, a snake, and snap on jacket :p and a bunch of 18v drills and bits.

I work with tools all the time, and yet I never heard of "red robertson" screwdrivers.

I looked it up after you mentioned it and I see that it's a Canadian thing. When I looked it up, just about all the mentions of it were on Canadian websites.

craftsmen hand tools are garaunteed for life.

while overpriced, they are good about exchanging them.
A friend of mine used to be a framer. When his chalk line ran out of chalk he would exchange it no questions asked... (chalk costs ~ $1)

Snap-on is crazy expensive. That said, I have 10+ snap-on screw drivers, 6 or 7 ratcheting srewdrivers, and about 8 socket sets! Along with everything else they carry.

Well some people live in apartments and really do not have the nead for any tools. The apartment comes in and fixes the stuff in the apartment. also most of them do not allow you to work on your car on there property.

one of my goals in life is to have a full machine shop in my garage. I love being able to fix/build stuff myself.

I don't know, you really only need a few basic tools to do almost any job. These guys that have 650 piece tools sets with 35 different screw drivers are pretty funny though, who needs all that stuff?

As far as a truck goes...I admit they come in handy, but every time they DON'T come in handy you have to drive around a big freaking pickup truck. I'd never buy a truck unless I had two cars, I just couldn't stand going back to driving a truck to work every day for the benefits of moving something huge every few years. My hatchback Mazda 3 can fit almost anything that I'd normally haul around.

I've got tools to fit pretty much every application, all stored in seperate areas for special situations. Woodworking tools, plumbing tools, electrical tools, computer building tools, the list goes on forever.
I own just about every power tool imaginable.
Beautiful thing is, I know how to use them and I'm not afraid to. :)
I've never paid anyone to build or repair anything for me unless I don't have the time. (Lots of houses, cars, 4 wheelers, toys, and I'm only one guy.)

My wife has a better set of tools than most people I know. She's not afraid to use them either, but she'll only get them out if she's tired of waiting for me to do it. :)

Having a truck has one downfall though...

Family Member: You have a truck, right?
You: Yeah.
Family Member: I need you to help me move to Nome, Alaska.
You: What?
Family Member: But first we need to get my girlfriend's dresser.
You: Where is it?
Family Member: Punta Arenas, Chile.

This is why I'm not getting a truck until I'm well away from my family.

I've lived in many different apartments, and use my tools at least once a week for something. And they don't like you working on your car there....but I've done tons of work on my cars in their lots anyway :D.

I have tons of tools - nothing better than Craftsman (most of it is cheap crap, actually) but they always get the job done. I also have a 5.5hp 30 gallon Craftsman air compressor with a full set of air tools, as well as a folding engine hoist and leveler at my parents' house. Obviously I can't carry those around with me to my apartment, but everything else never leaves my sight. I'd feel naked without it.
