How do people get by without owning any tools?

This seems most common with single women, but there seem to be plenty of men out there as well who are like this. These are people who's tool set cosists of a rusty flat blade screwdriver, a hammer that the head is falling off of, and a pair of pliers that look like they were purchased at the dollar store. You usually only find out about this when you're visiting said person, and something simple at thier house needs to be fixed. You offer to fix it, only to find out that the reason the knob has been falling off a cabinet for 4 and a half months is because they don't own a single tool with which to fix it.

Ok, it's slightly more than that. It seems that even if these people did own the neccesary screwdriver, they wouldn't know which direction to turn it, or where on the cabinet to put it before turning.

How do people get by with out being able to do the simplest household jobs by themselves?

I can't imagine not owning simple things like screwdrivers and a 3/8" drive ratchet. It'd be like not owning silverware to me.

I have tools, but I'm bad about losing them or leaving them under a car somewhere, so I buy a new 20 dollar set of sockets and stuff about every 6 months or so. Whole reason I don't have any MAC or Snap-On tools.

Society is changing. I've been working construction with my dad lately so hopefully I won't turn out that way. :)

growing up we always had a good set of tools that our dad taught us how to use. When I first moved out, after getting the pots and pans I got me a good tool kit and a drill set.

half the fun is ghetto fabbing the tools as you need them

I eventually got tired of this and I just buy tools whenever I see them on sale as I'm passing through. Sears always seem to have bargain bins full of cheap tools to sift through

Not only with women, but with men too. Specifcally, loser-ass freeloading bastard men. The ones that ask to borrow my dvd's when then the bf works at Blockbuster and the ones that ask around my back by asking the gf to borrow my screwdriver and don't give it back for months and take a month to give it back after I ask for it. The ones that come to a graduation celebration dinner uninvited and don't pick up their portion of the tab. Sorry, just ranting about the gf's sister's loser boyfriend.

I've already got myself a craftsman socket set, wrench set and screwdriver set (only 17). Took up an interest in cars last year so my grandpa got me a good set of starter tools for my birthday. Hopefully they last me 5 years.

a few screwdrivers(although the phillips head ones are always nowhere to be found, which are also usually the ones i need)

pliers, vice grips, needle nose, magnetic teloscopic thingy, hammer, and a wire brush

Yep...

I installed a ceiling fan the other day, should have been a "screwdriver only" job, ended up using a hammer, socket set, hacksaw, & drill.

I'd be lost without a truck.

I have no idea:confused:
I started my credit at 16 buying that chrome eye candy from the Snap-On truck.
I worked at a service station through high school, and could not stay out of there when he pulled into the lot.
A bunch of my original tools were stolen 10 years ago, but I still have some of the stuff from back in the 70's.

I'm getting there...only live in an apartment so space/need comes into play.

Have an 18v DeWalt hammer drill, 2 cordless Dremels, 3 hammers, mallet, elevnty beeeellion screwdrivers of all kinds, wrenches, several pliers (Klein and Channel Lock), side cutters, wire strippers, 14 volt cordless drill/jigsaw/sander/flashlight set, socket set, many many many drill bits of all shapes/sizes/purposes, 6 foot step ladder (I sold my 28 foot extension ladder to my sister in law), cable caddy, and assorted supplies and more basic tools.

It's gonna rock when we move into a house and I can build myself a small industrial park in my garage :p

while overpriced, they are good about exchanging them.

I have the advantage of having a huge selection of tools at work. I have the basics (drill, hammer, couple of screwdriver sets) but anything beyond that I just borrow the tools from work for a night.

I always say that we could do anything from pull an engine to open heart surgery with all the tools we have.

I own loads of tools. Everytime I decide to do something myself I end up buying more tools...that's a good thing though.

I have a Craftsman mechanics tool set (I think it was 168 pcs or something like that) in a large rolling Craftsman tool chest. I've added many pieces to it though, I probably have 50 or so screwdrivers and a hundred or so wrenches along with maybe 100 or so sockets. I have a couple air nailers, a Dewalt compound miter saw, chainsaw, a couple other power saws, a Dewalt 18v cordless driver, a Makita hammer drill, hammers, 25 gallon air compressor, an impact wrench and impact driver, a couple torque wrenches, a tile saw, a vice, a bench grinder and many various other tools.

I don't use these tools everyday but it's nice to have them in case I decide to take on another project. :D
