How do people do ASCII art?

I believe there is a software to do this. <just guessin, but only a lamer would do it by hand

The images you linked to above were created by a program that scans in pictures and then maps the color density to ASCII characters. I remember seeing this a while ago, but I don't remember the URL.

yeah there is a programm that converts AVIs to ASCII art movies... kinda cool, did it to the Ice Age trailer (that darn squirrel)

how about this? It's really for html use only, but at least it does things in color use to be freeware, at least the copy I use to have was... I'm sure there is one still floating around...
